December 7, 1941. We were totally unprepared for what happened at Pearl Harbor. Took many Proud Military Volunteer's away from us. I worked directly across the street from the memorial, was there plenty of times and also the 50th anniversary when Bush was there. Extremely moving experience talking to some of the survivors.

Walking around Hickam a lot of the buildings have bullet impacts in the concrete that they left as a reminder. I had to go there daily to pick up the daily imagery to bring back to JICPAC where I worked.

I saw Bush Jr. get off the airplane while watching TV. That staged photo shoot took away from the honor that the solders deserved. The most noticeable image was the huge banner that said ''mission accomplished''. And we all know how that turned out. Not all the soldiers volunteered, many were drafted, many enlisted because they feared for their country, some enlisted because they thought it was the right thing to due. Some objected for other reasons, and worked in shipyards, and other jobs in the war effort. My aunt machined mortar casings on a lathe. I had relatives who were in the Battle of the Bulge, Italy, and Africa. The whole country was at war.

Now when I go to the supermarket I see more Japmobiles than anything else. Patriotism?

Hat's off to the soldiers that saved America from the Nazi's and the Japs. And to those who suffered even after they returned home.

I should have started the service members that lost their lives on the attack were mostly volunteers.

Thanks for that info. They are still honorable men to be thanked.

My dad was stationed at Pearl Dec 1941, he flew to Ca on a transport, and as driving to Ga to marry my mom, on Dec 7th he was almost there when he heard the news on the car radio.... They were married n Dec 8th!!! Then back to base!
He retired from the Marines in 1955, 2 wars later. I was 5.

My father was caught up in that. In a 300' destroyer escort. They had a man wash overboard. Never found him.

As for the Pearl Harbor attack, we lost a lot of brave people that day, and leading up to the surrender. But we got our vengeance.
