Question about carbs for tunnel rams

I have a question that's probably going to sound stupid but here goes....
As you can see from pics, i'm running velocity stack air filters, but i want to run these like in the pic below >>> View attachment 1715436196
But my problem is these are 9 inch diameter and from what i can tell, they wont fit as thay are slightly too large. The stacks are 8.75 inch diameter see pics >>> View attachment 1715436197 View attachment 1715436198
As you can see, i have sat a 9 inch top on one of the stacks and the difference is visible. Anyone have any suggestions as to why it wont work on mine? I would have thought all tunnel ram tops would have the same centre point to point (centre of carbs). Thanks in advance.

As you have found, not all tops locate the carbs in the same postion.

Two things. Inline mounted carbs as a general rule are mounted closer together to save space and make linkage hook up easier.

Sideways mounted carbs can be mounted further apart because carb length is no longer an issue.

Second, those filters with very small filter area like you are using are power eaters. They don't have near enough area to feed a weed eater, let alone a big engine.

The velocity stack design is awesome. The small filter area is death to power. I've found as much as 100 HP on a 572 Chevy at 6500 RPM by just pulling the filters out of the velocity stacks.

Just a FYI.
