Flexplate is not fits the torque converter

Hi, asking for your help again. Looks like I've ordered wrong flexplate (TCI Forged Flexplates 145200) to my torque converter TCI Saturday Night Special Torque Converters 141500

Can you please help me to select the right one? Thanks a lot in advance, don't want to make the same mistake

The reply is (for the records) that I need TCI Forged Flexplates 145700
 
Flex plates from Chrysler. Note different sizes and crank bolt patterns. Do you really need a SFI approved flex plate. Stock flex plates used on all MOPAR engines.

I'm not sure what type of performance you are expecting from that converter, but I bet the stall speed is pretty low. Not many performance converters are built on a 12 inch core. I bet a stock 10.75 high stall would outperform it. I just haven't heard many good things about TCI converters, at least their Mopar ones.

I agree that's probably not a performance converter of any caliber, BUT, nowadays, diameter has little to do with converter flash speed anymore. Nothing like it used to. You can get a 12" converter made to flash 4500 if that's what you want. I feel SURE that's not what he has, like you've pointed out. Converter technology though, has evolved greatly in the past 15......even 10 years.

Transmission is TCI-111100, motor is magnum 360 5,9l (from Cherokee), intentions are simple - to have the project finished and the car running. no tuning, mods, just running. Maybe later I'll want from the car more :)

I don't know if this will help you any, but I used the factory (balanced) Magnum flex plate and the original neutral balanced converter.
One of the holes that mount it to the converter needs to be egged out about 1/8 inch but it works perfect.
 
What I'm seeing here, looking at the picture in post #1 and reading your post #9 (360 5,9l Magnum), is right outa the gate you've got a balance issue brewing! Even thou the plate is the wrong diameter, you still don't have any form of external balance provisions to accommodate the 360/ Magnum engine.

^^^^ exactly what came to mind!!!

Hopefully his motor is internal balance (maybe the Magnums were and my memory is escaping me?)
 
Now I’m absolutely puzzled. Do you know any articles where I can find an information regarding the balance? How it should looks like, any specs?
 
Magnum are not internally balanced....LA are internally balanced.....LA and Magnum are not balanced the same...

ATP Flexplates Z-332

search ebay for 5.9L magnum.....the weight is on the flexplate

B&M 10242 is the part number but discontinued. I bought one off facebook a year ago...

So, what I've bought is TCI Forged Flexplates 145700 (as TCI tech spec recommended) and it's "Engine Balance:Internal", that does mean I have no balance? I need some flexplate with the external balance like ATP Flexplates Z-332 with external balance? what will happen if I'll use the plate I've bought with no balance?

Just checked - I have TCI Saturday Night Special Torque Converters 141500 and it's "Balanced:Yes" so there no issue? sorry for the stupid questions, first time I doing anything like this :) If I get it right - this combo (engine and transmission) should be balanced either internally (engine), or by flexplate or by converter?

^^I believe that is the WRONG flexplate^^

Here is the deal........273/ 318 engines are "already balanced" within themselves, and require NO external weights.......either on/ in the front balancer or at the rear, the flywheel/ converter

360 LA is "externally balanced" meaning it requires a WEIGHTED front balancer AND weights (off center) on either a stick flywheel or the converter

The same is true of Magnum 360 except that it requires DIFFERENT balancer / weighting than does the LA. EITHER LA or Magnum are called "external balance."

The flexplate you referenced indicates it is for INTERNAL balanced engines like a 318

THE ONLY OTHER EXCEPTION is if you have paid an engine builder to add weights to your crankshaft to balance the 360/ Magnum within itself. In that case you want neutral balance or internal balance components such as converter / flexplate

There are basically TWO schemes used over the years. The older LA used weights welded to the converter, but in a "swap" you can buy aftermarket weighted flex plates in order to use a neutral converter----which you appear to have

The Magnum engines from the factory CHANGED this---they used weighted flexplates and a neutral converter.

Confused? So am I LOL

and yes, I’m confused and totally lost, looks like I’ll open my own shop for the flexplates...(now I have two).

No, The magnum engines are externally balanced. Tour flexplate is apparently for a internally balanced engine. You need to research your converter and make sure it is not balanced for the LA 360.
 
Mike I think you misread his meaning. But you are correct. Achill, you appear to indeed have an "unbalanced" engine...that is it requires EXTERNAL WEIGHTS. That is why they are called "externally balanced" You must have WEIGHTED front balancer and weighted converter or flex plate to cause the engine to be in balance.

But looks like I have weighted converter? (Balanced - YES)

1. No weights to my crankshaft
2. No weights to flexplate
3. Looks like I have to buy the third flexplate but with the weights. (or can I add the weight to one I have?) Please help to get the right one (TCI recommendation was wrong)

you can buy a weight kit for a magnum and have them tack welded on the convertor and use the flex plate you ordered.or find a factory one or b&m used to make one also

70 aarcuda has the right answer. I'll repeat: The TCI converter you have has no balance weights. It has a 10.5" bolt cirlcle. For any 360 or 5.9L I know of you need a flex plate with balance weight(s). For the 10.5" bolt circle for this big converter, this is the one you need: ATP Z-332
