El Cheapo vs. 440

-
The Dart will be a track-only car. But maybe I want to drive around on our private property for some testing. So I built it a simple exhaust system with summit tubes, 3" muffler and turndowns.

What I really like about the new look of my six-four is the conversion to a postcar. I really didn't like the hardtop-style.

Two weeks ago I pulled the engine. It is now in Mr. Wedgy's Big Block Shop for finally assembly.

Mr.Shift&Mr.Fast aka KickDown and DieWilde13 just finished my 489 with 486 gears and spool and the nice early style A833. Thank you, guys!!!

4.86? you will have fun, but you'll need bigger tires.......i'm looking forward to hear it scream at 7000+ rpm at the upper end ;-))

With the Milodon oilpan the centerlink hit the pan even at little steering to the right.

20161103181725wtfzp8g73k.jpg

I really didn't want to smash or cut the Milodon. So I cut the idler-bracket off and had it welded back to the K-member about an inch deeper.

upload1sez5k93a8t.jpg

As a result I do have about 1/2" clearance between idler arm and oilpan.

After that I rebuilt the front suspension and cleaned all the parts up.

I brushed the spindels and sprayed some Protewax onto them. The result is not as shiny as in the foto.

And finally I could bolt the fresh suspension back together. This was fun!

Thank you very much! I really appreciate it!

I cleaned my headers up and painted them with a high temperature coating set from VHT. Don't know, if it will last long. Ar, I don't really care...

Parts for my 3rd member. Spool, billet yoke, bearings and a crush sleeve eliminator kit

My early-style 833 with steel bell and the very cool Mr. Gasket Vertigate shifter

Thank you, Shift'n'Fast!!!

My valve covers looked good. But after washing them for paint, I found some sand. Super cool! Some idiot sand blasted them at any time. I can imagine, why they were for sale. They for sure killed one fine big block!

I drilled the buffles off and cleaned them. After welding and a little bodywork they are now straight again and look pretty good.

See you later!

All I can say is WOW, You my friend are INSANE, in a good way, Love the car and how you go about doing what needs to get done. Keep up the good work and please post a video of that monster running balls out.

Honour belongs to Wilde13, who designed and built it. He knows how to do it!

Thank you very much!

Now it was time to build the mighty 440!
I brought my collection of parts to Mr. Wedgy's Big Block Shop.
Let him do the measuring and filing and all those stuff that can't be done with a hammer and a cutting wheel!

upload_-1.jpg

The heads are a later open chamber casting. What was the number? 346?

upload_-11.jpg

I am not ready with this mechanical setup. But it is together for now

upload_-12.jpg

Ready for installing. This was fun. But I will put it apart soon for clutch and painting the engine

upload_-13.jpg

This was a super evening! Everything fitted together.

upload_-14.jpg

Thank you, Jackson383! Now I've got my own valvecover decals!!

upload_-15.jpg

Now I need to try to wrench it all together...

Congrats on passing the Tech Inspection at Hildesheim. I'm still wondering why it was done in the dark. LOL

I had to hurry, because the race at the Hildesheim Airport was getting close...

I didn't get it done, but the day was there and I wanted the car to be at the race. Just to get it out of my shop for the first time in 5 years. And to get some nice pictures in the sun, too :D

This was a great weekend under the sky.
Yes, Gaz, you are right. In the evening we pushed Cheapo to tech inspection. And they said, if I could get it running, I was allowed to race. It's safe and fits the rules.

Nice job.My 64 will be done so just need to replace pistons rings in the 496 block. But my 1940 Plymouth coupe keeps getting in the way. But in is almost done to. Should have never started two cars at once. Will post pics.soon. I like you`r car you did a great job. Did Mopar have any big block cars built for you`r neck of the woods? Interested in passenger side exhaust manifold

That's good news.....

After I didn't get it running for the Hildesheim-Race, I left it alone for about a year. This was the right time to build me a new shop with a real roof and real walls and a door that I could close. Many years my place was more of an open air shop...

Now finally the El Cheapo Garage is finished and I have my Happy Place.

37459810nm.jpg

In Hildesheim I learned that even the smallest tires will not fit with my custom headers...

37459811mw.jpg

So I cut them off and found a shorter way. Maybe this will be a bit loud...

37459812rv.jpg

37459813qx.jpg

At the same time some mechanical parts had to go. Cheapo now has electric waterpump, electric fan and no alternator anymore. As a race only car this should work.

37459814tn.jpg

37459815vn.jpg

37459816yv.jpg

You get some funny ideas, if you visit Petty's Garage in NC. We were very inspired and also had the luck to talk to Richard for a while. He is really a very nice guy!!!

37459817mg.jpg

Three weeks I searched the keys to open the trunk and get access to the engine parts... Finally I drilled the lock open and found a way to make the lid lighter and lock it with nice cheap pins...

37459818cn.jpg

37459819su.jpg

To change to big bolt pattern, I found these nice adapters at Summit:

37459820nr.jpg

1964 rims from a Volvo 444 or 544 fit perfect. I mounted 7.60x15'' Morosos.

37459821sh.jpg

My Pie Crust Slicks also rubbed at the outer wheelhouse. So I cut the metal and beat it as far to the outside as possible. Then we welded the gap. Now there should be enough room for the tires.

37459822lr.jpg

37459823vc.jpg

This evening I will mount the 8-3/4 again and see how all this worked out. I can't wait to see the stance of the car.

You have some inside knowledge... I had to look up Hammelburg, LOL.
As you know there's many castles in Germany, but not in Hamburg. Big city near the sea.

Did I derail the thread now?

I was stationed in Schweinfurt 2 years 7 months and 4 days. Me and a couple buddies used to run around the countryside on mopeds. One weekend we took a cruise up to Hammelberg Castle.
Went to the sporting events at the 72 Olympics in Munich also.
