Externally this looks like a knockoff MSD vacuum advance distributor, but under the cap it doesn't look like any distributor I've seen. Any idea what the application of this thing is?

Without more pictures it's hard to tell. It is for a eight cylinder engine but what kind any ones guess. Does it have any numbers on it anywhere ?

Its got a part number, W1218 stamped on the body. I guess its a cast Chinese knockoff. Descriptions say it uses a GM 4 pin module, but the pins are on top of the module as opposed to 2 on each side like other GM types I've seen.

Looks like a Chinese interpretation of a US distributor.

I agree and I have to say the one I have (it was given to me) has saved me a few times. Most recently I went to fire my 410 and was on a seriously tight time frame to make a show and the brand new made in america ignition box failed to spark, threw in the chinese stand by and made the show. Now I fully admit if I ran one full time I would want another in the trunk for spare parts but I guess at $65 a whack I could lol.

Hey I am guilty also had one for my 440 when I was building it. Worked fine just do not trust them. Then again what new stuff can you trust right?

I appreciate the feedback. I'll hold onto it and see what happens. I'm a few months out, engine is at the machine shop now.

Thanks!

Mine is not the same type, it is the GM style with the big cap and coil in the cap. Real HEI. But it is made by the same chinkesium company they all are. Mine has been in the 351M in my 75 F250 for over 5 years and never missed a beat.

Does the shaft spin freely on yours ? I have one and it seems kinda hard to spin.
