415HP from 318ci IS POSSABLE!!

Good #'s on those 302's bobby, especially the exhaust.
What's the cfm roof on those 302's 240's? and what int port volume/cc do you end up with?
Nothing like getting away with a smaller valve and avoiding the chamber shrouding that comes with the bigger.

Makes me wonder what kind of #'s I might of had if I stuck with 1.88 or only went as big as 1.94 skinnys on my J's.

You do good things, keep it up.

On my bench they top out at about 235 or so, but I've been told that my bench is a bit low, and all I can go on is my bench. These heads are 136 cc's. Larger valves don't tend to make more air flow up top, and larger valves tend to hurt low lift flows, and this is what you need when your running camshafts that are .550 or smaller. And the flow patterns need to be adjusted just a bit for higher lift cams but not much, as cams for small block dodges don't get too much larger that .650 lift. So this would only make the peak flow need to be at .550 lift.

Bjr,if word got around that you can build 470 odd hp 318's for 3,500...
I think youd be booked out 2 years in advance...

I think were onto a good thing!
Keep it up brother,an will someone harass bjr
an get him to build you one of these engines
already!?

Yous sorry sods are lucky i dont live in the states!
Woulda been a done deal already!

Nemesis , is your mechanic Theo by any chance? Or Dave? or Gary?
Those are the three 10 sec thru the pipes 360 owners currently in Melbourne - as far as I know anyways.....

I too agree with nemesis...I hope you get a lot of work from this thread...and as I said before...when my other car sells, I will be in line for on of your famous 318 torque motors...I am glad to have your info here as I am sure many other 318 owners are thinking the same thing

I believe that the price was $3,835.00, I would take $3,500.00 for the engine thats been run and use for testing.

Yeh my mechanic is Dave.
Guys a fun. I know of theo, met him once,he used to have
a purple vh,that the one?
I sent you a pm i think about a week ago....

Did you get my pm?

Did theos car run on pump fuel tho,
Like would it do that time on pump fuel?
I was wonderin who was the guy that built that wicked
turbo 318 charger....

Who wrenches on your beast?

Ok I don't know if people still see this post but cause we're on the subject of Mopar and 318's 340's 360's 400's and maybe others, I was wondering if I can get some help? I am thinking of getting a 1973 dodge charger but my problem is I don't have alot of cash so I was wondering if getting a 1973 dodge charger with a 318 ci engine is a good idea?

Depends on the condition, price, and what you want. If you like 73 Chargers and the condition and price is right I'd say go for it. Just make sure an pick it over with a fine tooth comb since you don't have a lot of money. Without much money the last thing you want to get is something that's worn out and will break down a bunch. As far as the 318 goes, if your looking for a driver a 318 is a great engine. Just not very fast in a heavy Charger unless it's reworked a bunch. There's always the possibility of swapping in a big block later if you want some serious power.

My 72- 318 402 hp at crank while its rowdy it's fun on the street I only drive it on weekends 10:5:1 , 236@50-110- .500 lift , rpm air gap , headers , 360 j heads milled and lightly worked , 3000 stall , 3.55 sure grip , previous owner had it on dyno one pull made 315hp/358ftlbs but was aborted at 3800 rpm due to dangerous lean condition

Ima lil confused; it is currently 402hp@ unspecified rpm; (What was the 402 at?)
but was 315@3800.

Oh , and the math doesn't seem to quite work out

358x3800/5250=259 hp

315x5250/3800=435 ftlbs.

But it does work out at around 4600;
358x4600/5250=314hp

So I'm still a lil confused....
I'm guessing that 236/110 cam is about 280 advertised, making the Ica to be 70*@106 installed, which is predicted to be over 160psi; which is real nice. But the VP of only 114 predicted demands a high stall, which you nicely covered with the 3000.
That makes a nice week-end warrior

It's the opposite 315 hp 358 ftlbs ? Your equation has the torque # where hp is suppose to be ....

I wanted to share this info that I found on Engine Masters...my first thoughts on my 69 Dart was to do a 5.7 or 6.1 Hemi swap...then I found this site:

Mopar Engine - 318 Engine With 415 Horsepower - Engine Masters Magazine

So why go big block or even a 340 or 360 when 400HP will do the job just fine for a driver or even a bracket car...and I will save a bundle not doing the swap...the build consists of 95% all stock Mopar parts...only the pistons and cam are aftermarket...I was very impressed with the results of the dyno run...hell, even the dyno guys were impressed.

I posted this to maybe encourage those of you who want to chuck the 318 in favor of a 340-360...just want ya to know there are ponies hidden in the mighty 318:read2:

My old stock stroke 318 made 477 at enginemasters.
10.4 compression, iron heads.
After detuning it a bit from when it was dyno’ed( much less agressive cam) i tossed it in an all steel, flat hood 71 duster with my big butt in it(320). Car weighed 3400 pounds and clicked off mid 11’s with just a 4.10 gear with 28 tires.
Lots of fun. Shifted it at 6300-6400

I can only go with what you wrote.
and if you flip the numbers, then
315x3800/5250=228hp, so it still don't fly.
If you want that to compute then
402x5250/315=6700... or
402x 5250/358=5900
but no matter how you slice , they ( the 315/358 numbers), don't seem to have anything to do with 3800.
I'm not arguing that you can or cannot make 402 hp with 318 cubic inches.
I'm not even arguing about your numbers.
I just want to know where the peak torque was, and how big the number was.
Because I have a 367 in a 68 Barracuda, that by it's ET of 93 in the Eighth, at 3467 pounds and 930 ft elevation, makes 433 hp, with a 230/110 FTHcam.... so by comparison, my Eddie-headed 367 seems kindof sucked out.
Maybe I shouldda left the 292/292/108 cam in there,lol..............
