My son's 71 valiant lost its brake lights. Fuse is good, power to the switch, I took both wires off the switch an made a jumper wire to test. Still no lights. The turn signals all work, as do the hazards, and tail lights. The dome light does not work. EDIT There is 12 volts to the dome light. Yes, we tried new bulbs This is his only transportation. Any ideas? Thanks.

Dome light out means no source voltage for the brake lamps. It's a safety indicator by dome light operation.
Time to get a test lamp, or meter and measure voltage starting at the fuse. Check the fuse with a ohm meter to be certain.

Check the plug for the rear section of the harness, it should be down by the drivers left foot behind the kick panel

I did not check the dome light bulb, just noticed it was out. there is 12+ volts to ( tested with voltmeter) to the brake light switch, That is why we tested with a jumper wire.I will check for power at the dome light. Fuse is new, changed it first. Thanks.

Will do. Thanks.

Ok, I was wrong, the dome light does have power. It just needs a new bulb. The tail/brake light bulbs are good, put new ones in since we had some sitting here.

Double check with the pedal depressed do you have power on the white wire into the turn signal switch. That is brake switch power out of the switch going into the turn sig switch If you have that and the turn signals work, then, bad ts switch. Double check and wiggle the hazard switch

Ok, We wiggled the hazard switch in the on and off position. with my jumper wire in place. It is 12 gage wire with 2 spade ends connected to the red and white female ends from the brake switch. The red wire has 12 volts.

Looks like we will be changing the turn signal switch. Are there any good brands?

Sorry I can't help you on that one. "All" of the "used to be" brand name electrical parts are now chineseofizized. This includes NAPA/ Echlin, Standard, and virtually any other old "name brand" you can think of. Then there's junk yard.

You MAY be able to work around it but I don't remember how. WAYYYYYYback in the 70's I had my car and a fellow sailor had problems in the hazard switch section caused this problem. By moving and re-soldering a couple of wires, I bypassed the hazard function, but got the signals/ brake lamps to otherwise work.

I am likely in the minority here, but I bought a ts switch from either year one or Classic ( one was way cheaper, don’t remember which) and it has worked fine for a couple of years. I normally don’t like chineseiem, but this worked good and was only about $30 on sale compared to the $100 + price tag on the more expensive ones.

Switch should be here tomorrow, but I have to work. Hopefully work on it this weekend. Thanks to everyone who helped.
