Subjects Not Taught in School Any Longer

I work in a high school. Last year we had a kid who was very disruptive in class, swearing at the teacher, etc. They took him to the principals office. He told her to F off, and spit in her face.
She graduated him and sent him home.

...and then they come to work for me.

I manage the cleaning contract at a large textile mill. I have 55 employees and except for two supervisors they are all entry level positions.

Many (not all, but many) of the employees under 35 years old will not work unless a supervisor is directly watching them. They are not ignorant people, they have just never been taught to complete anything. They have zero personal accountability. Most of them will lie to my face. Then expect me to give a second or third chance to keep their job.

Trust me, I live it every day!

As said above, many "life skills" should be taught at home. However, they should be reinforced in school. As also stated above, kids know all they have to do is shout abuse and they get what they want. I deal with that regularly also. Problem employees say to me " I'm recording you" thinking that I'll cave in and let them get away with anything. And I laugh and tell them they are terminated.

I spend a lot of time and effort trying to teach young new employees how to "work". I feel like if I can help them it will stick with them throughout their lives. Once in a while I can, but most of the time I can't and end up terminating them. Discipline in schools would go a long way towards teaching personal accountability.
