Importing/exporting project to Canada

Might be purchasing a project car shell from down in the States. It’s in fairly rough shape (no engine/trans/rear/fenders/ hood) but it has the dash with VIN and the fender tag. If the seller gets a title for it to go along with the bill of sale how difficult will it be to clear customs at the border and get it into Canada in its current state
 
The one thing that you will have to do is go through a U.S. broker. It is required by the U.S. Customs to export a vehicle and without their paperwork you will never be able to get it through the Canadian side or get it licensed. I think you can get a broker for about $150 if you look around.

Get your paper work in order !! They are a pain in the *** in my experience. Twice I sold cars to Canadian buyers and both times they put me through a lot of BS. I have bought cars in Canada and brought them back to US, and the border agent filled out two papers after showing them the title and bill of sale and they checked the VIN, I was on my way.

We've brought a few back. Fax a copy of legit title to the US border crossing where you will be bringing the car across. This has to be done 72 hours previous to you coming to the border with car. Print off the fax confirmation and bring that with you as well as bill of sale, current title. I cant remember if seller has to sign the title or not?? Seems to me that it SHOULDNT be signed, but double check.
Also the fax you send to border crossing, make sure you put your name, address phone number etc on it.
Take enough paperwork to choke them. We had ZERO hassle from US side. All issues were Canadian side looking for tax $$.
We didnt require a broker as we brought the cars back themselves.

That's exactly the way it was until a few years ago. To export from the U.S., a vehicle, ride on mower, golf cart, basically anything with a VIN, you have to use a U.S. broker. It is U.S. law now unless it changed in the last 3 months or so.

Since 2014, an export filing requirement is expected by the US Census Bureau to be filled into the Customs and Border Protection Automated Export System (AES). The AES must be sent in prior to the 72-hour notice and is handled by a U.S. domiciled company: a customs broker, a US Party in Interest or a freight forwarder. Once the AES has been accepted, an Internal Transaction Number will be issued and must accompany the request in order to begin the 72-hour export notice.

Sounds like a pain in the butt, but it could be worse. Back in 1989, I sold a NICE 70 Challenger R/T roller to a dude in Switzerland. He could not get the car into Switzerland in that state. He always came to the US every winter, so he found a 383 and 4 spd, and got the car fully functional before shipping it to Europe. Everything on the car had to be fully functional before he could even get it into Switzerland. I didn't keep his contact info, but I always wondered how the car turned out.
