Speedmaster Small block porting tips and results Part 1

-
I know someone in FAST who tested extrude honed ex manifolds vs stock manifolds back to back on the chassis dyno.

Let’s just say he won’t be doing it again.

Seems like everything I've ever heard about extrude honing is that its a joke, but it sounds cool when it rolls off the tongue.
extrude honed
balanced and blue printed
ported and polished
roller rockers

Not tryin' to take a pot shot at anybody thats had it done, but its the kinda **** that lawn chair hot rodders love to talk about.

Pinch measurements
9.30 stock
1.015
1.040 kissing the tube

If you look in this picture you with just begin to see the tube. You may think wow is this work the work involved. Well I gained .110 the height of the port, so yes it is worth it to me.

In the next series of pictures you will see what this allows me to do. Here’s a few pictures of my tubing job. I cleaned it up some with a carbide burr but it will get more attention when I debur the whole head with a sanding roll

I wish I would have taken this picture before I started grinding on it but I think you can see what is happening. I snapped a picture of the stock head but it’s still on my flowbench from flowing the exhaust

So the head bolt hump can been ground pretty much straight? Or is that just starting to go through to the other side?

I was going to put mine on as-is after checking everything. After seeing how straight forward the chamber and pinch mods are, I don’t think I can do it. I’m going to have to work them over a bit.

I don't think I will do much more than a seat grind, Port match and clean up the casting parting lines. Did someone mention the valves have already been back cut?

You guys are going to know more about head porting than my 31 year old son does. He’s raced since he’s been 16 and can build an engine, but has zero interest in head porting other than he want me to port his heads. Lol. I keep hoping that this changes before I either die or get to old to teach him.

Leave it with the wife, where he can find it later.

And threads like this, we can use, in a big way!
Mucho THANKS!

Lol. My wife put up with me for 13 years and decided it was time for her to move on. God Bless her for the two kids she gave me.

Whether I port my own heads or not, I have a greater understanding of how they work and why. Thanks

Just posting a before and after.
I know your not done.
Hope you don't mind that i keep doing this.

PBR, do you leave the radii at the floor and the ceiling alone or remove some material there as well? Wouldn't think you want a sharp corner but what can you get away with? Match the gasket all the way through?
