Kid played hockey in Eagle River today.. what a rink!

Built in 1925, all of wood framing. Man, just looking at that pattern of 20' 2x12 oak planks that make that roof is amazing.

Somehow through 12 years of my kid playing hockey, I never made it there. 2 hours north of me.
The pics do not do it justice.. it's unreal.
I wonder how many swear words those big old oak planks have soaked up since 1925...
 
That truly is beautiful and like Rusty said a historic masterpiece. I would love to see video.

I have two great grandson's who have played there... my grandson always sez that's place I should visit. I've driven past it a thousand times...
 
I found a vid, but it really doesn't show how impressive that place is when you stand in side it.. it's huge.
 
What I found interesting was just the engineering. None of those 2x12's are rounded.. they are bolted together to create an arc. When I was looking at it, it didn't look like anything was nailed together. At every 'V' joint, about a foot above the joint, there's 2 huge bolts, about 1 foot long and and inch in diameter with metal backing plates. There has to be thousands of those bolts.
 
I also found a rolling bar, with beer prices on the coolers. Of course, the don't sell during High school games.. be fun to be there during an adult game with the beer flowing!

I agree with your grandson, lol. It's an amazing place.
 
Eagle River, WI is a very popular place for snowmobiling also... :steering:

That's a great looking stadium.... :thumbsup:
 
Might be a 'cool' place to have a FABO get together in the summer. I think they keep the ice year round there. I'd be willing to play goalie again.. I have an awesome record of 3-0 against 2 squirt and 1 pewee teams :)
 
I didn't know that was there, have to check it out. Looks like there's a ski jump ramp next to it, that still there?
