Another vote for the mini! My original starter killed the battery so many times when I didn't have the engine tuned properly (I had just gotten the car). I got mine from a 95 Dakota, original Nippondenso. That sucker spun up my slant so fast it was fantastic, no more dead batteries. It now finds a home on my small block. I'd only go back to original if it was a OE, restored car.
 
So I am kinda torn when it comes to the topic of mini starters.

On one hand I usually like OE stuff because I always say nothing fits like an original part and it's safer (especially OE wheels) because it was engineered specifically to be there.

On the other hand, I like the smaller size of the mini starters and the way they seem to turn the engine faster with more oomph.

What's your opinions on mini starters??
Like them, don't like them??
Do you see any advantages or disadvantages over the originals??

Rani mini starters draw less amps and are much more powerful than those old ,heavy factory starters that feel like your cranking on a 6 volt system. Run a decent Denso type starter you will never look back.

The main thing I didn't like about the old ones is how after the engine starts, it sounds like the starter is still turning with the engine about 5 minutes after it started.
 
I don't want to hear the starter, I want to hear my engine.
Barely hear the mini before engine fires off. Perfect.

Got a dozen of those noisy old starters out back.
Have to check date codes on em:D

I love my mini starter, but it doesnt sound as good as my dad's '66 Coronet from when I was a kid.

That's one mopar I very much want.

Mini starters are original. Just later model original that also happen to fit earlier model engines. I don't see the problem.
Those are mostly the Dakota ones right?

I grabbed one off a Ram 2500 at the junkyard to keep as a spare, looks exactly the same as the one on my Duster which supposedly came from a Dakota. Anything with a 3.9/5.2/5.9 from the 1990s will have the same starter, from my understanding at least.
 
My old big and heavy 40-50 years old Mopar starters are always still good, never have to buy any new ones!!!! 6 drivers here right now!!
 
I always loved the good ol mopar gear reduction starters. Until I got hooker super comps and it heat soaked the starter. I pulled a mini starter out of the scrap pile, put a new solenoid contact in it and never had a problem since.

I installed a mini-starter from a junkyard '90s Dodge truck into my '72 D200 this past summer because the stock starter wouldn't fit with the headers I put in. I miss the sound but man my engine cranks so much faster and once it starts I can tell from the ammeter gauge it uses a lot less current, needle doesn't swing as far over to "charge" as with the stock starter. IIRC the stocker had an issue with the solenoid anyway it sometimes wouldn't crank in cold weather.
