Speedmaster Small block porting tips and results Part 1

Actually, it looks to me as though the spindle is aligned with the guide twice per seat.
And there’s two stages of the cutting operation..... roughing and finishing.....with a realignment between the two.
Also, it’s automatically varying the spindle speed during the cut to minimize chatter.

Pretty nice piece of equipment imo.

You think the tool head is centering over the guide? I guess it would have to because evidently the operator set the first head of the run in the machine, leveled it and then the tool head does the rest. That's possible.

Still not sold on live pilots. Maybe with a single pointed cutter and even then any run out of the pilot and guide will show up on the seat runout much more than a dead pilot/ball driver.

The other thing I'm not impressed with is the speed. If the cutter is making smoke, you can bet the cutter is growing quite rapidly. A growth of .005-.010 isn't unusual when the tool head and tool go from room temperature to however much heat is building up.

Dealing with a boring bar years ago that had the same issue if you ran it wide open like the manufacturer said you could.

The first hole was ok. The second hole was maybe useable. Every hole after that was lamp shaded so bad you either had to go the next oversize or set a sleeve I'm those holes.
