If you didn't already know it, the state of Oregon has taken it upon itself to ban the plastic bags that you get at the grocery store. If you want a paper bag you get to pay for it. So, you have to provide your own reusable bag if you don't want to buy a bag. While I have mixed feeling about the law, my real problem is most of the available bags really suck. They are just plain color, or advertising for someone, or well, less then manly. Today I found the bag pictured below online. I think this one is going to work for me!

 Nice bag! I might pick one up and use it for something else.

They tried those bags around here last year and the year priour on a voluntary basis. A few grocery chains, not the state. Went over like a lead balloon. So they began making the plastic bags out of thinner mil plastic. Which means anything of any weight...... You have to double the plastic bags now.

My problem with them is not just Big Brother trying to tell me what to do...... At my added expense. I see them as less than sanitary. Imagine carrying packaged meat or fresh fish products home in these bags one day and fresh fruit or vegetables another. Can't wash the bags between each use. "Gee, would you like some salmonella or perhaps some e-coli or blood bourne pathogens with your veggies today, Sir?" Errrr...... Thanks, but no thanks!

Also...... I no longer partake, but I have seen ladies attempting to carry wine bottles out of Krogers in such bags and the bags are not deep enough, so the bottles tend to tip over and fall out of the bags on their way to their car. Leaving broken glass where we must walk and drive.

Its just a bad idea. If they are that hung up on plastic bags...... They could go back to paper bags and use as much recycled paper as possible in their making. A better choice to my way of thinking.

Best regards,

Harry

I agree that reusing bags that had meat in them could be risky health wise. That said, there are the cheapie bags on a roll the stores provide near the meats and fish areas. In CT, the new law forbids the use of plastic bags by the store. Paper bags are allowed. But will cost you 10 cents each. The store gets the 10 cents. They used to be free. Why? We are allowed to bring in our own plastic bags. --
N.H. wraps liquor bottles with heavy paper bags for free.

This is just another inconvenience the public has to put up with because of the lazy slobs of this world who only care about themselves. Like the ones who throw bottles, cans, and Mac bags out their car windows.

Littering is bad business all 'round. Have you ever observed how some folks litter? Interesting demographics there.

My pet peeve is with those who open their car doors in parking lots and even in traffic when stopped at stop lights and drop their trash right onto the pavement. Obviously, they know better or they wouldn't attempt to be sneaky with their littering. Yet they feel entitled to use the world as their garbage dump. Can't be bothered to put their trash in a bag and drop it in the trash can at home or the refuse can outside the next place they stop. Or in a dumpster down the road. Nope...... They gotta trash the place they are at so it looks like the place they came from.

Illegals litter differently. They just throw it out the passenger side window into the roadside ditch. Especially soiled disposable diapers. Yuk! Well, at least they don't dump it onto the pavement and don't attempt to be sneaky about it. 70 MPH and out the window it goes. Bada bip bada boom!

Don't get me started,

Harry

I agree with you 150 percent. I can't stand when people litter. Every freaking place you pull into has a trash can use it you moroon. Rant over.

Up here in the province of Ontario in Canada we have been doing the pay for plastic bags for at least 5 years now.
Government mandated and proceeds go to some kind of environmental thing.
I look at it that the businesses lose customer service by charging for bags.

However, now I see more often people juggling their items as they leave a store. So I guess its slowing the bag usage down. Sometimes people do get bags for one or two items that they could juggle.

The reusable bags have become very popular with some people. They even have insulated bags for meats etc.
Others use heavy plastic green boxes.

I myself am a juggler. I usually leave all items loose in the cart after purchase and then juggle from vehicle to house.

Some stores used to provide cardboard boxes that the products are shipped in but that has dried up alot too.

Now government has stepped in and are now mandating paper bags made from recycled materials to replace the plastic bags. At one time they were outlawed.

All for the benefit of the planet and "us". Its not just the littering, it's to reduce single use plastics everywhere.
There is plastic garbage in damn near everything. Drastic changes needed to be made. 30 years ago.

wouldnt surprise me if this would kill off smaller brick and mortar stores

walmart has free shipping for orders over 30 bucks

i cant remember i went shopping and spend anywhere near that little
so, i can sit on my couch, order my groceries and have them delivered the next day, to my doorstep without having to worry about how to fit it all in bags

i can see this forcing business there

That would be a great bag to carry around at the swap meet. You could put $1000 worth of parts in there. LOL

In CT, the new law forbids the use of plastic bags by the store. Paper bags are allowed. But will cost you 10 cents each.

Here in California the stores charge 25 cents for bags. I keep bags in the glove compartment and repack from the shopping cart to bags when I get out in the parking lot.

When I stop seeing Congress and the House sucking on about 4-5 plastic bottles of water during a Session I may believe plastic is a problem. I usually take my fishing bait in a plastic bag when I go out fishing. I raised my sons to take at least five pieces of liter each with them before you leave and throw it in that bag and we would dispose of it.

Gotta catch him first!
He's not faster than a bullet. Your vehicle is considered part of your castle concerning carry laws around here. So you can carry with one in the pipe in your vehicle without a permit. For motorcycles, that castle includes 2 ft. around the bike and while sitting on it of course. I asked a cop about bicycles and his reply was 'that is a gray area'.

I just recently I pointed out to a dirt bag who threw his bag o **** out the window what a dirt boom he is,
He proceeded to curse me and threaten me with DEATH...we had a fist fight right in the middle of the street..over his littering
For now on I mind my own,a dirt bag is a dirt bag.

Smart.
I've given up on trying to make the world a better place a long time ago. I just do what I can personally and make sure I can return fire if need be.

I guess if you're dumb enough to be blasting off shots in traffic because you were dumb enough to dump littler all over the street and someone threw it back in your car you probably shouldn't be allowed to own a gun. Chances of that happening are probably not that likely.

Way too much disposable crap in our lives !
We went to Kuereg Cups at work. What a colossal waste of effort and materials !
Most inefficient machine I have ever seen !
Think about it.... billions of those little plastic cups going somewhere .

Look at the giant plastic islands we have in the oceans. Definitely better ways to do things.

and no where near as tasty as "real" coffee

really, the only "single cup" coffee machine out there that is tasty, is a Phillips Senseo
and their pouches are made of paper, so no where near as much mess
