Wow, the NSA NEVER tells the public about security problems. (until now) because it was so severe of a threat.
The short story is apparently a Windows update patch fixes (this one) after the NSA knowing about it for years.

In plain English this means remote users (hackers) can install spying or hacking software into a Windows 10 machine without Windows knowing it's bad.
This also makes sense that any Microsoft security programs will also probably not see or remove this Malware.
Apparently there is a Windows Update to address this security hole in the Operating System, so in this case allowing Windows Updates is critical.

I can only imagine how much money and grief Windows users could have saved if we would have known this years ago when the NSA did.
Thanks Gov. :mob:
Windows 10 Has a Security Flaw So Severe the NSA Disclosed It

Windows 10 is HORRIBLE.
(Just in case there was any doubt.)
I'm like : "Where the F did they hide the thing I'm looking for now".
Don't even get me started on how slow it made things on a brand new computer I bought.
Buggy isn't the word for it.

^^^ Rock the XP! ^^^

win10 integration with all your other devices is scary. Bluetooth phone proximity can unlock your account, etc. Luckily, you have a choice. Linux (Ubuntu, Mint, etc) are very good now on modern computers. And Chromebooks/Chromebox computers that are a throwback to the old "terminal/mainframe" days are good for about 90% of what people do on computers nowadays. They are good as no code can be run on them, so exploits are rare and thay are always up to date. Bad thing is they usually have a firmware lifespan of about 5 years (similar to windows), then they are dropped from updates. Im on #3 for my kids due to end of life support.

I'm a reasonably intelligent end user. With a good amount of tech ability.
XP worked.
7 pretty much works.
I bought my wife a Lenovo with Windows 10 around 2 or 3 years ago.
What a piece of junk.
Have to use Chrome on it.
IE is useless.
She only needs internet and a Chrome book last month fixed the problem for her.
Wish I had known earlier.
What do I do with the boat anchor?
P.S.
I've got old XP disks.

Agree Steven.
It's getting to the point where after a conversation with a customer about what they normally do on the Internet, we often suggest a NON Windows tablet instead of a desktop or laptop running Windows.

A tablet with at least a USB port or two can do almost everything any tower or laptop can do.
Then when it blows up it can be tossed and replaced instead of having to pay to get it fixed or disinfected.
The cost of about 3 appointments for service from us can buy a brand new device, and we have customers that have been calling us for years over infections.
(Those never seem to learn)

The Lenovo has always been the one I dislike most.
Toshiba is another.

I thought there was a Linux with a windows like OS that people could use instead?

Is it too difficult? Have to know coding?
Does not COMPLETELY integrate?
With significantly less processing used.

Wife bought a new laptop, harddrive failed
I had a friend replace the hard drive and install windows 7-she said it had problems trying to retrofit the OS, & then the hard drive failed again-wondering if now they are built for the OS???

Everyone of my dozens of cousins (& sister) work with software-at least half can or use Linux, as if it is the Jesus software -coming from my ignorance.

Yep, Linux and Ubuntu in my opinion are better. Small learning curve, plenty of step by step instructional videos. I think they are much better than windows.

maybe because i don't use all the bloatware that comes with windows, and go through and turn off a lot of crap, i don't have problems with 10. i build my own towers and install everything myself.

^^^^^^^
If you can build your own computer, you are not a typical user.
Obviously, people should not have to be a computer builder to have something that is user friendly these days one would think.
Are we going backwards?

Toshiba is another.

All I know is that I have 3 of the old "off loan" business Lenovo Thinkpad "T" series laptops.
Running XP and 7 on them for years and they seem bullet proof.
The Lenovo I bought the wife from Office Max is a very different looking
"Ideapad 110" with 10 on it and it is useless.

However, we have Lenovo Ideapad 110s at work with 10 on them and the seem to work fine on the limited system interfaces we use them on.
That's all we use them for is to hook up to some electrical sysems to trouble shoot.
We don't really use them like a normal computer would be used.
Very limited with no wifi or internet use.
I'm sure there are differences in what Microsoft sells.
Maybe they just don't have commercial bloat wear on them?

Your "corporate" win10 machines are probably stripped down/decrapified and possibly locked down by your IT dept.

windows has a history of making things (especially things an administrator needs to do) harder and harder to find with every version.

One thing my crew had to do A LOT on XP needed 26 additional mouse clicks in win7!!!

My personal favorites are the things you have to launch "new" looking interfaces for, then navigate to some almost hidden area, which then brings up an interface that's 3 generations old.
Why TF didn't you just leave a link to that interface in control panel?

to me it's the same reason i do most of my own car stuff, i hate paying someone to do something i can enjoy learning to do myself. isn't always practical, but i do what i can :) but i sure don't begrudge anyone that doesn't have the time or interest

I use Thinkpads a lot. T520's I have 3. T420's I have 2. I have others. However, all of them run either Linux or partitioned with "not very much used" Whinehozed on a partition, and Linux on another. I use either Ubuntu or Mint, with "Mate" desktop

We can launch a space shuttle into orbit, and then fly it back to the ground, but Microsoft can't make an operating system that can't be hacked or plagued by virus's constantly?

WTF?

I JUST USE THE COMP. TO RESEARCH, USE EBAY, AND GET ON FABO EVERY MORNING, OTHER THAN THAT , I DONT GIVE A RATS *** ABOUT ANY OF THE ELECTRONIC CRAP THATS OUT THERE NOW.
I DONT HAVE TO HAVE AN OLD ONE CLEARED BY ANYONE EITHER , I TEAR THEM APART TO SEE WHATS IN THEM , THEN BURN THE REMAINS -

win 10 takes a GEn3 Hemi to run good. XP ran down the road great on a slant 6. 7 needed an LA. Point is the destination (FABO) can be reached by both-- usually at the same time.

You can still throw tiny linux on those old chromebooks (past support cut-off) with their 4GB of eSSD non volatile memory.

@adriver you can throw linux on that lenovo 10

Trouble with the new 10 built laptops is that alot of the hardware in those is Win10 specific, there are no official drivers for them for any older OS or even linux (ie. sound! very common issue and a deal breaker even with 3 win7 laptops I tried linux on) Company isnt going to even develop a driver for Win8 or 7 or 95 when 98% of the market for new rigs is 10.

This 4 year old g7 that I use (liked it so much that I bought another used for my Son for college) worked great on stock 8.1..I added a bluetooth chip for a speaker and that chip wouldn't work with 8, had to upgrade to 10 (free, thanks FABO!) seems to be running fine, although I think its a tad slower in wifi throughput but that is subject to many factors.
