Has anyone changed the lower running lights to work with upper lights to work as brake and turn signals? I figure this might help avoid getting rear ended.

easy to do, just use an 1157 bulb instead of the 1156 and run the extra wire from the top element. I don't think it would do too much from a safety standpoint but it sure wouldn't hurt. I have seen pics of 66's with a 3rd brake light and it looks like it was born that way. May put one in mine...

You need to change sockets too which might not be fun. The old sockets are usually peened in and not simply snapped in like the later model cars.

I have thought of doing the same to my 66 Dart. I would have to fish 2 more wires into the trunk lid though. I would probably be better off getting some LED replacements that are much brighter than the 1157's. And of course a different flasher.

I had a company make some up for me for my conversion, I had to make it first and send it out for them to duplicate. it takes 2 splice's onto the turn signal(brown and green) light and the rest plugs in. (you do have to flex the inner sheet metal out 1/16" to clear the sockets though)

Is the 1156 hole different than 1157? I remember it being the same size.
The 1156 is a single filament/contact and the 1157 is a dual filament/dual contact bulb. The 1156 has even lugs and the 1157 has offset lugs so they can't be interchanged.

I figured I would need to replace the light sockets for the dual element bulbs. The sockets aren't part of the housings, so it's just a matter of finding the correct socket. My concern is with the heat of the bulb melting the lower lense, but maybe if I go to LED it won't be a problem.

Picked these up this weekend.

They fit perfectly for the lower light. Probably would work to replace the upper socket, but they don't extended the bulb as deep into the housing. I'll splice them in and install some LED bulbs.
