Purchased a 73 Dart sport car, 340 ..4speed, had alot of work done in the 90s..The 4speed pattern is..

1st. 2nd
R. 3rd 4th

That is the pattern the owner told me after I purchased it?? Very strange pattern. The car has a good amount of engine work, and trans has a big bell housing, 4.11 rear.. Need help figuring this out?

You got something messed up man. It's not a overdrive is it? All other NewProcess 833's had the makeshift pattern.

Can you get a better shot of that transmission? Almost sounds a shift lever is upside down.

The man I bought it from said it's been that way since the early 90s..The car is going to be delivered to me early next week from California.

Oh ok. Well when you get it, come back here and post some pictures of the transmission. I just bet it has a lever swapped around. The H pattern is industry standard and reverse is always in a corner. Normally up and all the way left. Though on the BW T18 in my Ford truck reverse is all the way right and back. Still in a corner.

Oh and just so you know. If it is a standard non over driver 833, ALL THREE levers should be pointing "UP". If it is an over drive unit, the 2-3 lever should point "DOWN" That's the lever towards the front on top, above the reverse lever on the bottom.

I tell you what I see in that picture RIGHT NOW. The reverse lever "APPEARS" to be flipped downward. That's backwards.

Most likely an OD 833 with the 3-4 shift lever upside down. Or a standard 833 with lever oriented like an OD trany.

Here. Look at this. See how all three shift levers point UP? That's a standard non OD four speed. If it's an OD four speed, that FRONT lever should point DOWN. As yours is, it appears that reverse lever is pointing down. That's incorrect.

IDK "gates" could be swapped.

How do you get 1st and 3rd on the same gate?

On an OD 3rd and 4th (on the same gate) are swapped.

R over and down?

reverse is on the long shifter lever, the one that is different, which should be on the inboard side, IIRC,next to the tailpiece.
The only way to get it like yours is to put that lever in the middle, and that defeats the reverse lock-out
I can't believe it actually gets all gears assembled like that, lol
I can't believe somebody actually drove it like that
IMO somebody just reassembled the shifter wrong. No big deal to make it right.
Flipping the reverse lever at the trans only moves the corner in which reverse appears on the shifter, But the lever also hangs down too far for my liking, and not all shifters will adjust to the N-gate with the lever upside down. I ran mine that way one time and couldn't get used to it.
IIRC the lever on the trans is also longer than the other two. At least on my Mr.Gasket Bang! shifter it is.
I prefer finding Reverse in; hard over to the left and push, corner.
The levers in post #10, I'm pretty sure ,are B/E-body.

On an OD 3rd and 4th (on the same gate) are swapped.

Like Rodney Kind said about the LA Police Department, "beats the hell outta me". But I am pretty sure that reverse lever IS upside down. It sure looks like it.

That could explain it being over and down instead of over and up

Someone could have had a V-gate shifter in it previously and the reverse lever didn't get flip back over...

Either way or it's not in the transmission it's in the shifter or the linkage... Likely an easy fix and don't get used to it that way..

So, I got the car on Wednesday and the 4 speed seems normal to me. I took a few more pictures, not the best.. reverse is definitely all the to the left and down.

So definitely the reverse lever needs to be flipped upside down and sticking up words... That will put it where it's supposed to be now are you still saying that it goes from 1st to 3rd and then to 2nd to 4th?.. or is the one two three four in the correct pattern?.

So is this a question? The reverse lever is upside down Look at the photos Steve posted above

My leaver is facing down like that one but I'm running a v gate shifter.. also when I switch to my normal Hurst shifter I have to switch the first second third fourth shifter levers to get the correct geometry.. but I did notice yours seem to be correct with the offset one on the 1-2 shifter...
