Hey all. I've been laid up for the last few weeks, so I'm trying to plan out some early season projects on my Dart. I have a refreshed stock LA 318 two barrel. I changed out the oil pan last summer, and everything looked good from the bottom, so I am looking at doing a poor man's top end rebuild. I'm new to significant engine work, so I wanted to get some expert opinions.

I have gotten a used set of 308 heads, which are clean and in good condition. I also have a barely used Edelbrock Performer dual plane intake and Edelbrock 650cfm four barrel carb. Lastly, I have a new air cleaner assembly for better breathing.

I would like to get some recommendations on a cost effective cam; something mild for street use, a little lopey, but with a nice horsepower boost. Also, I'm not sure on the shape of my rockers yet, so I'd like to get a recommendation on some cost effective ones there too in case I need them.

Lastly, I also have to install a new radiator. It seems like it would be, but is it possible to access the cam without pulling the engine if the radiator and grille are removed?

Thanks in advance for helping a newb. And yes, the engine bay will be painted blue at some point. It was black when I got it.

What year 318, transmisson and gear ratio? The 308 heads are great but they will likely kill your static compression, depending on what heads are on your teen now. If you choose to use them a custom cam would likely be required to get the dynamic compression up. Cam will greatly depend on your willingness to change the valve springs, possibly top the guides and maybe add a converter.

If I had this to do I'd leave the heads I have, look to a 340 repo grind or similar (or custom) and use the performer and carb you have. Save the money you'd put into the 308's for a good set of headers (Doug's or TTIs) and exhaust system (Jegs or Summit direct fit).

Stock rockers work great as long as they are not worn, new heavy duty ones are available. If you swap cam, please degree in the cam to the crank. Buy a good multi index timing chain.

Or, if it ain't broke leave it alone and pick up another 318, 360, 5.2 or 5.9 to build while you enjoy your car on the side.

ive always gotten away with just removing rad for cam changes, demon and duster anyways, yes the 308s will kill compression, stick to stock or find a set of 302s, summit 6901 cam would work fine, just my opinion though, im sure others will chime in on that one

A stock 340 cam would work with your combination. A set of 302 heads and headers would really wake it up! 65'

318/ 302 heads differences
340 cam in a 318 as AJFormS how that works out- or the summit
the NHRA minimum on the 308 heads is around 57 ccs maybe a .040 cut- you also have to cut the intake face
calculate your new compression using a Mr gasket .028 gasket
