Any one ever had a problem with a A833 OD getting stuck in 3rd gear? This happen right after I bought the car, I thought it was stuck in 4th (want come out of 4th). I pulled the side cover and it was actually stuck in 3rd, 3rd was pulled back past the ‘’dogs’’, it clicked right back in once I pushed them down. I thought it was because the old shifter did not have stops and I just pushed 3rd to far. Spent $700 on a complete new shifter with stops and adjusted it for hours until I could slam it through the gears and it was fine. Just took a easy drive to the gas station, shifted like a champ all the way there and the dang thing is stuck again. Trans was rebuilt right before I got it. Also does anyone make a plug for the rear shaft so the oil stays in when you pull it? I bought one on line but it’s worthless. This is my first Mopar and it’s about to drive me nuts!

Post a picture of the hub that’s sticking, doesn’t make sense why it would stick in gear unless the hub is wore or linkage is not right.

Do you have the right side cover on it? The internal spring levers should lock in the right place for the slider and stop the travel. I use an old slip yoke on the output, just make sure the vent hole has some RTV on it so the oil won't run out.

Do not ever block the vent hole, there is a baffle in the tailstock to keep oil from coming out of the vent. I believe you are talking about the output shaft where the driveshaft goes in for the seal correct??

This is one I just finished HEMI 4 speed, I use a piece of pvc with a cap on it to keep oil from coming out when driveshaft is out

I was talking about a vent hole in the back of some YOKES! Not the tailshaft housing.

Ok, yeah , sometimes people put them in wrong, the vent hole in the output shaft seal should be on top or it will leak, check that and make sure it’s on top

I am going to try and pull it out tonight or tomorrow. Here is a pick of it when it happened the first time, before I clicked it back. Trans shirts really smooth but for what ever reason it sticks. ’ll try and get a better pic when I get it out. As far as the plug. Not talking about the vent, just a something to plug the tail shaft were the drive shaft slides in so I can get the oil back in it before I put the trans in. I have several automatic plugs but there doesn’t seem to be one that fits this. Thanks guys!

You know I was thinking, and maybe you have a broken spring in that hub, that would cause the key's to tilt in one direction, and make it hard to shift it out of that gear.

This is the whole hub, key and spring set , the wire looking rings are the springs that hold the key's up in position

You might be on to something, make a lot sense. Never tore into one of these but defiantly something to check. Talked to Dan at Brewers Performance this morning and he named off about 5 other things it could be. I was hoping for a easy fix but doesn't look like that is going to happen. Thank you sir!

When you do a quality rebuild, you want a new or almost no wear countershaft, O/D main housings have slop built in at the countershaft. It should also have new bearings, bushings, thrust washers, and seals. Synchros need to be looked at closely. Check the interlock levers on the side cover and the 3-4 shift fork and 3-4 internal gearshift lever. Maybe even the side cover. Something is allowing the 3rd gear fork to over travel.

I've seen this before;
If all three struts are popping out;
-Check the back bearing, the mainshaft may be too far forward. Yours looks OK.
-Compare the slider to a known Mopar A833 slider. I seem to recall that other sliders will fit on there but the fork groove is out just far enough to cause this. Yours looks fugly to me.
-Also, and most likely; the brass rings are the travel limiters. If they are worn too far or the grooves are too deep or one is split, then the struts can over-travel and pop-out.

Good info. Going to dig in and see. Got lots to look at now, had no idea before. I’ve got a good Transmision guy going to help so maybe we can figure it out. Many thanks!

Many many years ago, I bought a couple of pkgs of brass rings from the Mopar dealer. Found out when I installed them, your exact problem. It turns out that every single ring was cut too deep in the strut recess. My cure was finding, in my stash, 4 good used rings. And they are still in there today and only one of them is tired; Hyup second gear,lol. It's always second that goes first.
Also in that new package; IIRC, at least two of them were no longer round, and I had to make them so. No big deal but you gotta watch forchit like that. I haven't found a home for them yet.

Take a good look at this; install your forks into the cover and check that the rooster-combs absolutely prevent over-travel. I've never seen that cover make trouble, but in your case, you gotta check everything.

Good, OD transmissions are a little tougher to put together, good to have help from someone who knows what’s going on.

No problem, and yes the guys at Brewers are very good, and always helpful, we as Mopar guys are lucky to have them around.
