The reverse lamp switch for automatic trans builds moved from inside cabin to the trans in mid 1968 model run. The wires with a connector you found were probably near the bottom of the steering column where base model switch was. There was also a extension harness that plugged into that connector to reach the console mounted shifter that had the reverse lamp switch mounted on it.
