10's on $5,000 ?

JPar hitting it dead on with the plan in post #727 (Damned if I don’t know how we haven’t talked this into existence yet). The entire dash assembly is worth $$$ and has nothing to do with making the truck go from a to b. Cut out the sheet metal flooring in the cab but leave the bracing and form and rivet 14 gauge aluminum back in. The skins of a newer bed with cables and turnbuckles ala the pro stock “wire cars” along with some Alston fender wells, the battery, and a fuel cell are all that needs to be in the back. The downside is even when you can make it hook up, it is going to have some scary handling on the big end with no weight in the rear. A rear wing is probably going to be in order. I would even consider going a little Baja and putting the radiator in the back, too.
well, I could put it on a diet right away by putting the ProComp heads on it, headers and an aluminum intake on the 318. 110 lbs right off the front!!!! Then manual steering and aluminum 15" rims!!!!! Another 100 lbs! There, the truck looks better already, about 210 lbs lighter and about 80 hp added! Boy, we just gett'n started too!!!! :D

If you don't build a tube chassis, cut off the frame and add a ft box!

Did not Studebaker make a light pickup!!???? lol
I know somebody that's been racing Dodge trucks for about 30 years.... I'll get a pointer or two on the truck body/chassis :)

If this thread doesn’t go any farther it doesn’t matter at this point. That pic of the 80 with the front end in the air is a great place to stop at.

It all starts with a plan. I ported a set of cast iron small block chevy Dart Platinum heads for my buddy S10 truck and it ran 10's. He wanted to run it on pump gas so I ported a set of aluminum AFR heads for him. He could drive it in and crank out 10.50-10.60's all Summer long with a solid lifter cam. His truck wasn't striped down at all with only a fiberglass hood. His truck was lighter than your truck sits now but he weighed around 350 pounds. Hopefully you will spend more time specking out an engine than you did choosing a vehicle.

I can not believe it took this long for someone to find a picture of a Dodge pickup on the track.
I didn't just "find" a picture of a truck. That IS a guy I've known for about 30 years. Track buddy we'll say....

Dodge truck was on the list of "affordable" cars on this budget. I didn't buy on impulse.

Yup...I think 2007 was the last time I made any passes in my car. Could have been 2008 but I doubt it, as I moved in February of that year. I may have made some passes on it that spring. My wife says she has seen me make some runs in it, but what does she know? She married me so that's 2 strikes against her right there.
Well I can see your hesitancy now to drag race again it's been so long and now all us Young whippersnappers have faster cars... I think it's best you just stay on the porch and bench race because I'm sure you don't want a young guy to hand you your first loss in 13 years.. how disappointing that would be...:poke:..
All that work and knowledge down the toilet kabloosh...:D...

Thanks for the video! I’m getting back to the drags this summer once I get healed the rest of the way up fully mobile again.

I think you jumped to fast buying a vehicle, but those are my thoughts. I would have started on the engine with a plan while looking for something more racey.

My thoughts as well...... if the real goal was a “ten”.
The only truck I can imagine using for this type of project would have been an earlier Dakota 2wd.

I too would have started on/done the motor first....... then if the right vehicle didn’t come along...... it would been stuffed into one of the Dusters.

It's going to take some serious muscle to hustle that truck. Its really to bad it's not a short box. When I said to make it a driver I ment 318 and all. I'd clean it up and give it a fresh cote of color, wheels and tires and go threw the mechanicals and daily the thing.
I'd say your buddy's got some serious part's in his what does it run?

And....... if you actually sold it for a profit..... you could add that profit to the $5K.

Well to push 4000 pounds down the quarter in the 11.50 to 11.99 range he needs to come up with 400 to 475 hp very doable with good heads and compression ( I dont believe it can be do with a rering on a smog motor for several reasons). The thing nice about a pickup is you can bolt a big slick on without much worry about interference and tire will make up for suspension.
The downside to 4000 lbs drag vehicles is they break parts especially stock parts. Axles, ring and pinions and transmissions , sometimes all at the same time.
This could be a fun runner and definitely suprising fast but not my choice for a hotrod.

And stock leaf spring are not going to hold up to that power. a cheap(STRONG) Set of Slapper Bars will help a bunch.

From What i understand he doesn't have a 440 only a 400 which adds even more to the challenge

Somebody that has a program for speed power check my hp numbers I'm using Moroso and I'm not sure if it's not wheel hp.

  • The truck pulling the wheels in the picture ran 11.3's @ 115 mph with a stock stroke 360, less than 10 to 1 compression, cast intake, thermoquad, .464 lift (?), 904, 8.75 rear end. 8" converter/either 4.88's or 5.13's.
  • They had a short bed for sale too that was virtually rust free, but it would have blown the budget

Anytime I want, I can pull the drive train and stuff it in a Duster.
