I'm looking at a replacement transmission for my 72 Dart 318 - 904.
I already bought a torque converter -
https://www.autozone.com/powertrain...smission-torque-converter-cr7/398776_524846_0

It shows fitment for Darts from 71-76

The transmission I'm looking at is 74-75 PK3743423 which means it could be from basically anything with a 318 in 74-75. Seller says it came out of a 73 Duster.

My question is:
Is the torque converter fitment based on the transmission or the model of the car? Or put another way, will this torque converter work for any 904 from 71-76 as long as it goes in my Dart?

Should work for any model 904 unless it is a newer lockup model. The torque converter is transmission specific not car.

Thanks, AZ's fitment guide showed different TC#s, specifically that the torque converter would not work in a 74 Challenger with a 318 and 904, while it works with a 74 Dart with a 318 and 904.

I would not trust auto zone’s fitment guide for an alternator, let alone a torque converter.

There are probably many different stock tq converter part numbers for different vehicles. Stall speed being what changed. But if it’s a 904 it’s a 904. It will fit.

It would also fit an A998 NON-loc-up model from any year AFMJ car. The difference is that the A998 has some heavier duty parts in it, and MAY have the alternate gear ratio package of 2.74-1.54-1.00. as compared to the standard A904 ratios of 2.45-1.45-1.00.

The only stipulations between the small TFs is that you cannot put a non-loc-up TC onto a Loc-up input shaft; or vice-versa.
Like TT5.9 said

1968 to 1976 non lockup style. Only two converters available in ANY Chrysler vehicle with a 225 or a 318 Engine.
One being a low stall, identified by triangular decal applied at the factory. Says LO STALL. Stall speed around 2000 rpm.
The other being a higher stall, identified by an egg shaped decal, again factory applied that says HIGH STALL. Approximately 23/2400 stall.
Dealing with A.Z. and the like may be fine for spark plugs etc. , but their staffs' knowledge on automatic transmissions is extremely limited.
If it fits a Dart, it'll fit any 68-76 904 period, with either the leaning tower of power or the 318.
This is the reason I'd avoid A.Z. and the like. Staff in these places have minimal experience with converters and automatic transmission.
Google Transtar and see if they have a warehouse near you and buy from them. Or go to one of the numerous converter builders websites that have been mentioned on this board and go directly to them.
It would be interesting to know the part number they sold you from their supplier. Does it say CR 7 on either the box or converter? I just looked at their catalog and what a load of mis-infomation.

Thanks for the detailed info.

I'll let you know tomorrow how it is labeled. It was a special order. I just went off of the fitment from the website and ordered it in-store. I don't have my old one out yet, but I would guess it is the low stall version. Between a coupon and AZ rewards points I got this one for $39 plus core.

Any luck finding any kind of numbers either on the box or the converter? Another personal thing, for me anyway, don't let price be your only guide. My experience has always been, you only get what you paid for. JMHO

It's in I just haven't picked it up yet. It was my birthday yesterday so I was too busy eating food paid for by other people to go pick it up.

Finally picked it up. NO markings except what looks like a transmission side balancing weight that says 10. All well and good, but this TC is for a 727. So the prophecy of AutoZone fitment guide being not up to par remains true. The big thing I missed is in the description that lists the size of the TC.

This is the correct one, which I would have known if I had asked what the diameter for a 904 vs 727 was.

904
"5.4" Overall Height, 130 Tooth Wide Ring Gear, with Forged Crank, No Weights, 5/16-18 Mounting Bolts. Non-Lockup, 11" Diameter, 24 Splines, 1.810" Pilot, Slotted Hub, 4 Lug Mount, 10" Bolt Circle"
vs
727
"130 Tooth Narrow Ring Gear, with Steel Crankshaft, No Weights. Non-Lockup, 12" Diameter, 24 Splines, 1.810" Pilot, Slotted Hub, 4 Lug Mount, 11" Bolt Circle."

Oh well, it was too cold to change the transmission in the driveway today anyway.

LOL Ok... those are both 727. AutoZone can't get anything outside of racing TCs for 904s. Anyway... I unexpectedly got a TC with the latest 904 I bought yesterday. He was a nice mopar fella and he assured me that it would be a functional transmission, and I could just install it for now. Fluid looks good and it doesn't seem to have any leaks, so I'm just going to use the stuff I got, clean my cooler lines and go for it. I'll buy a good TC when I get the 904, in the car currently, rebuilt.

Thanks for the advice folks.

.

The CR10L as you have found out, is also a 727 converter.
I have a ATC-PRO-KING catalog in front of me, and the proper converter for the 225 or 318 is their part number CR8L for the low stall and CR8H for the higher stall. AZ's cataloging on converters is wrong in so many places it's unbelievable! They have no listing for the 318/904 period from what I can find, only the 727.
Good luck on the latest transmission and converter. If I can be of any further help to you, drop me a P.M.

Correct they were both 727 converters. When I went in they couldn't order any of the standard converters for the 904. They could order only high stall converters for 904s. Technically the website is semi-correct, if your 318 came with a 727, but there is no mention anywhere in the description that says which transmission it is for. They need to add a transmission option to their vehicle details.
