Hi, I finally got my 73 Duster running after 2 years and several parts later. It would run and then miss bad. Finally narrowed it down and purchased new TSP distributor and coil. Now it runs, just need to mess with timing a bit yet but when I put in reverse, it stalls. Not sure if it could be the carburetor (since that is about the only thing that isn't new) or if I should be checking other things first. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks.

Get the timing and idle sorted out first before looking for other problems. You may find that once these 2 items are solid, you will be ok. If not, then it is time to look at other issues.

Thanks. T
only stalls in reverse ?
Did you drive this car before?
Set timing, check vacuum.
Thank you for the response. Yes, have driven it before. Going to get timing set right, check vacuum and move on to carb. If can't find the problem, will post again. Thank you!

Likely not enough initial timing advance, and if you "have a cam" it might be effing with the carb. Since you have a new dist, do you have any idea what the timing curve is "in" it?

Why is my timing dancing all over at an idle
Hah! finally , I know the answer to something!
could be one of several reasons.
Hang on I'm eating with one hand and typing with the other; multi-tasking,lol......
1) the timing chain is sloppy loose
2) you got crappy hi-tension plug-wires running parallel and too close causing induction firing, especially between 5 and 7..
3) The weights in the D are not staying parked
4) the idle speed is erratic, because of carburetion issues, and the weak flyweight springs are following
5) if you have a stock type Mopar ECU and magnetic pick-up, then the Polarity is reversed

Number 4 is a ringer; you can't know if the idle speed is fluctuating because the flyweights are doing the herky-jerky and causing it or,if the chain is dancing, or if the fuel-air ratio is screwing around. So you gotta work your way down the list.
If the first four are proved to not be the reason, that just leaves #5.....
Lets talk about this one. but first
Do you even have this type of ignition?

While I'm on here, would anyone know if you can change your profile name and if so, how? Getting ready to read directions sent to me above.
