Automatic Trans Converter Endplay

I have a few questions as automatics are new to me. Is there a Thrust Bearing in a 904 to Crank assembly akin to the pilot thrust bushing or roller bearing as in a manual crank? I never saw one so that might be a simple answer.

My real question is what is the assembly procedure for transmission mating to the engine with respect to endplay clearance of the converter? Do you guys just slap it (trans to motor) together and hope for the best or do you some how measure and shim the flexplate and TC to ensure the trans housing when mounted does not push on the crank forward and wipe out the main thrust bearing inside the engine.?.
