Ring and Pinion - What Brand ?

Car is a "Brand X". --- -- I'm planning to buy a new ring and pinion for My Ford, 8" posi, rear. -- Looking for suggestions re best brand to get. --- Thanks
 
I've used Motive Gear in my street car and circle track car. No issues at all. Proper installation is the key with any brand.

-- I've heard that they are a real good gear, but that's what I have. - They were new, and howled. -- They were set up 3 times, by 2 different guys (one Guy 2 times - other Guy one time) who have done, probably, 100, or more setups. - still howl at 55 - 60 MPH. -- Less than 200 total miles on the current gears. - Now i'm having them replaced, and don't know if I should switch brands. -- Thanks for the info.

Hit pick n pull grab a set of used 8.8 gears out of an explorer 8.8 factory Ford gears will set up easier, and may work with existing shims in the same locations as the old gears. Second plus will be the cost compared to new. Look at the data tag for the set you want. On explorers they come in 3.23, 3.55, 3.73, 3.90, and 4.10 ratios. Most common gear will be the 3.55 on V6 sports, and 3.73 on V8 XLT. The 4.10 gear was standard on the sport trak truck looking thing. Happy hunting. Whoops ford 8 inch is different than an 8.8. -- Don't know. -- I've spent quite a bit of time searching this topic, and find that Richmond Gears get a lot of bad comments re noise, although many say that is probably a set up problem. -- I'm very interested in all of this, because I'm tired of pulling the rear to, hopefully, quiet it at, normal, highway speeds. -- If this continues, I'll have to go back to Mopar. -- :D --

My personal experience is that if a properly set up gear-set is noisy on day one, you already saw it would be, when you patterned it, but maybe just didn't see it.
If you run it that way for some small period of time ( I can't be specific, as I don't know), then it will always be noisy... forever.
I also know that a very slightly noisy pumpkin, in an Abody; if you install that in a Challenger/Cuda, the noise will be greatly magnified in it's new home.
The only aftermarket experience I have had is with Richmond, and the 4.30s I bought new and installed were dead quiet.

get a ring and pinion set made by US GEAR ( NOT US Standard Gear ) -- made in the USA ,,, available from Summit , Strange Engineering , Quick Performance etc . --- Motive Gear bought out Richmond Gear several years ago , box is Richmond but a Motive gear inside--
your problem is a set up issue -- pinion depth shim incorrect or more than likely pinion bearing preload not set properly
if you buy a set of US Gears , they come from the factory with a gear pattern run on them --take a picture of the pattern as this is the gear pattern you should strive for in your set up then get the pinion bearing preload right ( 20-25 inch pounds new bearings -- 10-15 used bearings )

If you want the run-in gears from U.S. Gear note that they are at least 1.5X the price of the regular ones. They sell the 8" Ford "everyday" gears for $220-$250, but the 8" Ford run-in "Lightning series" are $350-$370. I have never heard anything bad about them, however.
 
I would get the US Gear ( strange) If hey don't offer the gear you want, go to Richmond. Richmond makes 2 levels of gears. Premium set is a "diamond cut "gear. Spend a little more , you will be glad u did.

Find NOS O.E Ford gears. Original Equipment gears are always the best, and surely still made in the U.S.A
