Patch panel tricks

I was watching a video recently and saw a really cool trick for making body panels perfect. One thing the guy did was make a template of the exact fit of say a lower door skin. Then he used a washer with a sharpie to trace around that panel to create the lip that will be folded around the bottom. Maybe this is an old trick but something I have never seen before.
