8 3/4 for 74 duster

-
Any year A (Dart, Duster, Barracuda thru 69, etc) body 8 3/4 will bolt in. They are getting hard to find, and correspondingly going up in price. The 66-70 B body rear is somewhat more common and cheaper, but the spring perches need to be moved and more offset to the wheels. Helps with running wider tires, slightly.

73 and 74 A-body. You can use 68-72 but you would have to drill your axles and drums for 4 1/2" bolt pattern. I'm not sure about later years. I'm sure someone knows a bit more than myself. I had some 4 1/2"BP Newport axles I had cut down and used the Newport 11" brakes and backing plates in my Big block 68 dart (Heavy) I plan on doing the Jeep Liberty rear disc. conversion hopefully this year.

'65-70 B-body works nice. Here is the latest one I did....

so any 69 to 72 b body will fit.. with perch adjustments

thank you.. 65 to 70 b body it is then,
then you use the backing plate , and brake drums on the 8 3/4?
did u have 8 3/4 axles redrilled for the other pattern?

what car did that come out of?
bot all b bodies had the same rear
  • Axles are 5 x 4.5 bolt pattern, same as my car had already.
  • I used the backing plates, brakes and drums from the 8.25 that was in the car. Perfect fit. If you have the 7.25 rear end, I'm told you can use those backing plates as well but you have to drill the 5th hole (never tried it myself, though).
  • As I showed in the video, I personally never did anything with the perches other than oval each hole inward about 1/4 inch.
  • Shock mounts are the same if you have 8.25. If you have 7.25, you can drill them to fit as 7.25 rear ends have smaller axle housings vs the 8.75/8.25.
  • 65,66,67 B-body years are ideal as they are a "smidge" narrower. 68,69,70 will work also. '71 and above got even wider.
  • B-body rear ends are much cheaper and easier to find locally and fit "next best" vs A-body 8.75.
  • B-body rear ends fill out the back wheel well better, and also give the 4.5 bolt pattern vs the small bolt pattern on the A body 8.75

65/66/67 B body are the shortest and have big bolt pattern and brakes. U need to move the perches in 1/2 in on each side. A body is 43 ctc. B body is 44 inches ctc. Kim

i am wondering why you would swap backing plates? why not just use all the 8 3/4 brakes ?

The brakes worked great on the 8.25, and were clean. There was no need for me to clean up the rusty 8.75 backing plates, put new brakes shoes, springs, wheel cylinder.

My drums and backing plates from my 7 1/4 transferred over to my 8. 3/4 after I got big bolt pattern axles. Costs money but burnouts are on the way
