I'm planning a cam swap and recently got a barrier. Need some knowledge please. Camshaft gear bolt out, three bolts on " cam retainer" out. Distributor out. Do I let up on the distributor gear and rock the cam? Does inviting oil pump involved? I didn't figure I should pry forward on the cam lobes. Seems like a bad idea. Any help apreciated

Valve covers off? Rocker shafts and rocker arms off? Pushrods off? Lifters out? I am assuming small block since this is in the small block section. Telling us exactly what you're working on cannot hurt. Year, make, model, engine.....all "that important stuff".

watch out for water coming out of the bolt holes from the timing chain cover going into the oil pan..........

lifters must be removed. Distributor must be removed. Then like you said, 3 bolts on the front plate and out it comes - Careful not to beat the tar out of the cam bearings! *I like have the timing marks lined up and then when you put the new cam in, make sure the intermediate shaft slot for the distributor is pointing in the right spot. Makes it easier.

Yep, take the intermediate oil pump shaft (gear on top that's engaged to your cam) out, this is all one part you know that. Lay it aside, re-install once you get your new cam in. Cam should come out once you get all this stuff that the other folks said out. I had to temporarily bolt the cam timing gear back on and do some twisting and turning while I had something to pull on, just by hand.

Sorry I never gave a thought to all the other relevant info magnum motor and lifters and all out stripped down ready to go but giving me a fight. First time I've been this deep in a motor in over 20 years. No manual or anything.it is the intermediate shaft I'm talking about. Do I let up on it and it come out first? It doesn't budge.

What is all one part?? I have changed a cam in over 20 years and I was helping back then so never really done it by my self. I was a mechanic in the army, well they said I was a tank crewmember but all we ever did was work on that sucker

The intermediate shaft does not have to be removed in order to remove the camshaft.

It doesn’t have to come out but will make it easier. Gently pull up and rotate the gear. There is a long shaft underneath that goes to oil pump. The shaft and gear are one piece.

Bolt the cam gear back on and pry? I can get it to move out about 1/2 inch. Then it pretty much binds on the intermediate gear. I tried pulling and rotating cam no go. So the gear should come straight up out of there ?? No gently to it. I prayed up with moderate force but unless someone says yes pry away I'm listening
