I have a stack of mopar radios that I need to test. These units are all AM units from 68-69 Mopars.

So what I would do is connect the radio to my replacement speaker, hook up an original factory antenna, and use my power supply to provide 12vdc to the power wire. Does this seem ok? Does the radio take 12v or is the voltage reduced to something else before it gets to the radio?

Second question; I am having the antenna hole welded up where it comes thru the fender. Does anyone make an aftermarket antenna that can be mounted under the dash or somewhere else on the car? Thanks much.

ground the radio chassis and provide 12V to the power lead. The other lead is possible the dash light circuit. It may not have a ground lead. Make sure you ground the antenna mount point. I dont think an internal AM antenna will give you good results. Use a VOM to determine what leads are grounded to chassis for ground lead if it has multiple wires in the harness. Early radios had 3 leads: power, dash light and speaker positive (maybe a neg speaker lead too) . They used the chassis as ground.

Pishta got it about right. There are two wires one +12V (orange IIRC) other is (pink IIRC) that is the radio dash light, it goes in the top of the chassis
The chassis is the ground.

There is another connector with 2 wires (green IIRC) that has two wires, Speaker + & -

Plug the antenna in, hook up the 12V and a speaker and start rocking, or not.

In my experience indoor antenna gives good results only on FM. For the AM you may get one station and that's about it. I did not have an antenna hole so I used one of those magnetic base antennas used for some trucks and ran the wire through the crack between the door and the fender. Works great for AM. For bench testing you can use your + battery post for the +12V red wire. Make sure you ground everything properly on the car or the - battery post.

Here you go.

I have this unit in my 68 Cuda and it works perfectly.
