What is the correct diameter for above, is it 2 1/8"? The one I took out is too big to nestle in the housing, it measures 2 1/2", been seeping for some time. Thanks

What year and take manifold and engine?

Don't know the engine year it has an Edelbrock air gap, the thermostat opening in the intake is 1 1/8 and so is the thermostat housing lip. Thanks for response.

OK, the Edelbrock Performer should use the older style water neck, thermostat & gasket. This particular old style thermostat measures 2-31/64, just under 2-1/2 inches.

You may have ether the later thermostat housing or later thermostat.

The way I have always understood it, is that lip in the housing is where the thermostat should sit, not under the housing flange. Thanks again

The thermostat should sit in the housing with a little play.
Between the large and small thermostats, there is a big difference when there sitting inside the housing. Take the housing to the auto part store and ask for both. Choose the one that fits tightest.

Yes I am sure this installation was like this because of the Vintage Air installation, take a look at the thermostat housing..

What effect if any, does the height of the thermostat below the flange make? Thanks

75/76 is your cut off year. Ask to see one from a 73 and a 79, for example. If you try to put the small one, in the big hole, it literally falls in.
And the big one in the small neck, is obviously too big.

The aftermarket intake companies blur these lines, but not difficult to figure out. Rumble is guiding you down the right path.

Furthermore on oem waterneck housings, the bolt pattern changes with thermostat size too, so they don't interchange.

Well for sure mine needs the 2 1/8 diameter thermostat..

I need a new thermostat housing the 2 1/8 fits the housing but falls into the intake. Any suggestions? Thanks

does your vintage air elbow use a chevy thermostat?
the recess is in the orange elbow you showed or in the manifold?
just hallucinating here
what would be nice is if there was a way to use a thermostat that shuts off the bypass like the magnums or the 361-413 Trucks/ motorhomes
Hint for max cool put a heater valve In the bypass

The thermostat housing is like rumblefish #5 response, it is in the elbow. I actually think the housing is from a Viper motor. The housing is not from Vintage Air, I think who ever did the install used it. Thanks for reply

Does anyone know if a small block Chevy housing will work? I am also thinking of just putting it back together with a new gasket and plenty of sealant. Thanks
