So while driving my dart around the speedometer likes to go all over the place for its reading on the speedometer, and also like to rest on 80 when the car was off. I’ve swapped out the cable and now it reads 20 with the engine off. I haven’t been able to drive it around since swapping the cable to see if it’s only an issue while the car is off due to other things I am fixing/swapping. When I swapped the cable I didn’t use lube because I didn’t know it needed it till 5 mins ago (got bad advice), but the cable is tight and there are no kinks but it does have a few good turns in it due to routing it to the trans. It’s a 1971 Dodge Dart swinger 318 and the new cable I purchased was the cable classic industries told me was correct for this car. Thanks in advance for the help!

If the speedo is not returning to zero then you have a speedo head problem. A cable will not fix that.

Im guessing Lord Sparky's "rebuilt speedo" was a suggestion for Joel Chapman and that should corrected HIS issue?

Well that's your problem. Take it back to the guy who rebuilt it.
Thanks for the replies everyone I guess I’ll just chalk it up to need speedo redone and push forward with other fixes for now.

I will add that even if you find another working speedo it might still need servicing. The lubricants dry up.

Yep.
It's a good idea to have a 50 year old speedo-head rebuilt, for the sake of accuracy.

Buy a cheap gps speedo & stick it to the dash. Or get a gps app for your smartphone & a dash phone holder.
