i have a chance to pick up a stock bore 340 block with no main crank caps... what are my options or just move along..,

$250 for caps
$500 for the align bore and hone

Maybe an it's a big maybe you can find used caps you can use.

Rocket on this site has some aftermarket main caps for a 340, if you are interested. Do an advanced search in mechanical parts for sale under his name "Rocket".

If it's cheap with no other issues - maybe.

How people lose something as important as main caps machined for one certain block will always be a mystery.

what's the bore
lifter bores rusted?
Stock bore ...block is at a local machine shop it was hot tanked and pressure tested...then they noticed that the caps were wrong. The guy who brought it in though you could just mix and match caps and had sold off the originals with other blocks.

Even if you dont use the block... Post the numbers on the side of the block.
There are people looking to reunite their cars with their original engines.
I've been looking for my car's 340 engine for years now. Long shot but i keep trying. Sold in upstate NY years ago to a guy in Canada. Never found out why.

Once the caps are lost the block's value is almost nothing, as the cost of replacing/machining the caps will add up to near the cost of another block.

Most shops charge noticeably more than the “std” line bore job if they’re installing aftermarket caps.

That’s a pretty good deal on the caps though.

Go to wrecking yard and get some 318 caps, they are not as big, but they will work, unless your trying to build a 550hp engine.

You can try 50 sets of used caps and still not find a full set that line up correctly.
Buy a new set and do it right.

You just cant fix stupid!

I’m going to see if I can find a rear cap that is close over the weekend and if I can I will likely buy the set for sale here and use the front four caps and do a line bore... my machinist said he is not interested in cutting the groves in the back cap for the seals.

I myself have a standard bore 340 missing the caps. Same deal. Someone needed the caps and they were gone.

I never put a value on it but this thread makes it sound as if it's a boat anchor... Dang....

standard bore 340 not a boat anchor
some do aftermarket caps anyway
and
it might be a matching number stash depending on year
there are those that pay up for a 340 where a 360 would work
Now where is a 340 demonstrably better?

They don't make 'em anymore so you need to decide if you want to fix 'em. Me? Anything is valuble. My last Hemi build had five sleeves...

For those who are going to scrap those blocks I'll pay the shipping or I'll pick them up most anywhere in the midwest. Seriously... would you toss out Raquel Welch if you could rebuild her like new?

I have a Gen3 Hemi block with a busted block... this will be my test engine for next racing season.

I kept mine because until I close this chapter of my life (hot rodding) there is no gain in me getting rid of it.... Caps come up for sale but you have to do the usual (timing, position, patience....)

And I have had a few PM's about selling it. Must mean this thread has a few less than stellar Bullet points in it lol....
