So I’m kind of interested in researching my engine to figure out specs and stuff. All I know is it is a 318 that may have come out of a truck. I’ve tried searching some serial numbers on the engine but nothing comes up. I was wondering how you can “decode” your engine through the internet. Let me know if there’s like a website or something. Thanks. (Pictures)

Look at the passenger side of the block, it will give you a date cast on the block.

Under the drivers side head on the front of the block there are numbers take a picture of that, also on the passenger side above the pan rail take a picture of the #'s on the pad.

looks like a pass-car pan and dipstick to me.
Do a compression test ; dry, then wet with the oil pumped out. That will tell you just about everything you need to know.
Pull a valve cover, back off the rocker gear, then measure the min/ max lifter travel. this may tell you more, if you do it right.

Or you can post some pics of the numbers below the left cylinder heads, the side of the block, and any numbers stamped above the the pan rail.

Kind of hard to determine the numbers. I believe they are 2538080 and 318-40. Does that help?

Thank you! There is also a sequence of stamped numbers below left cylinder head on front of block at the top of the block deck.

1967 -1974 or 75

Tear it down and have it sonic tested.

It's been fiddled with, pan was put on by someone down the line. Blue paint, could be a truck block. Might be a 4.040 candidate... same casting #
