Manual sbp front disc conversion feedback

-
I haven't used it, but a word of caution: that looks like a later A body brake setup that has had the rotors drilled to the 4" bolt circle. The potential problem I see with that is if the hubs haven't also been turned down to the small bolt circle center register size, there's no way they will work with any factory wheels or many aftermarket ones, either. I don't know if there's enough meat in the hubs to safely have them turned down yourself, either. Not poo-pooing them, just be aware... I'm sure somebody can clarify this.

That kit does warn you of possible interference with 14" wheels. Why not stick with original disc brakes?

If you want to retain your sbp wheels, and 2ant manual discs up front, go with the Scarebird set up. Did it to my son's 65 B'cuda. Works well.

Hey polarman I used that kit on my 66 barracuda back in Sept of 2017 and I thought it was great. Everything fit perfectly and it went together very nice. The only noticeable problem that I had with it when it was done was it seemed to cut down the turning radius a tad, nothing that really causes a big problem though but it is noticeable. You need to go to my old thread ( Ordered My Disc Brake Conversion Kit ) and read through it. There are a lot of pictures in it that will show you everything that I went through and you can read all the negative comments from the other members who did not think it was a good kit. One of the big concerns about the kit was keeping the small upper ball joint and using a crush sleeve on it to fit the new spindles that come with the kit. Some of the other members thought it was un-safe and they were not happy with the lock nut that the kit provides for the upper ball joint, some of the other members showed what they did to make them selves feel better about it. My conversion kit was installed back in Sept of 2018 and I have put quite a few miles on my 66 and still no problems at all, and the lock nut on the upper ball joint is still as tight as the day I installed it. Also I am running a set of factory 14" 5.5 SBP rally rims on my 66 and there are no issues with them either. There used to be a member here on FABO from Pirate Jack his real name is Eric and he goes by the name of PirateJackHotRod I don't know if he is still here or not, I haven't seen him in a while. Look at my thread I think you will find the answers you are looking for.

Thanks for the excellent feedback folks. If there's any other suggestions, I'm all ears. I'd really like to use the wheels I have to avoid spending another $800 to $1000 on new wheels.

I've been eyeballing that set up as well. do you have any input as to what to use for a MC and proportioning valve?

The piratejack kit is just the later 73+ A-body disk set up. They take rotor blanks for the BBP 73+ disks and have them drilled 5x4", and turn down the center register on the hub. The center hub is still too large to be used with most of the original SBP drum wheels, but I think they work with the SBP disk wheels.

The rest of the kit is straight up 73+ parts. The spindles are the same, so you'll need ball joint adaptors if you keep your SBP UCA's as the spindles use the later large ball joints. That kit will also increase the front track width compared to the SBP brakes, so if you have wheels with a shallow backspace they may not fit with those brakes even with the SBP.

The brakes themselves work well, and on the upside if you ever do decide to go BBP later you can just buy a set of 73+ rotors, the rest of the stuff can stay the same.

Small bolt pattern go for the factory parts if you can. Big bolt pattern there are a bunch of options with a bunch of people in the know on the site.

I changed my 72 over to the factory KH parts and the swap was easy. No regrets and never looked back but I have no interest in a large bolt pattern either...
