I have a good neighbor, in fact he painted my Dart (which is STILL apart) I think he's having a "mid life"

His son got into an apprenticship heavy construction and is barely "taking off" with that. The neighbor's son-in-law evidently got the ball rolling on this, he is some sort of banker / financial guy. Seems smart.

THE THREE OF THEM decided to get a dump truck. This is a big SOB. --and expensive-- KW, has 3 sets of pneumatic bogies, plus an air "swing arm" set out the rear. Bear in mind none of them have "heavy truck" experience, other than the "just getting started" son who has his CDL. None are heavy truck mechanics, and the neighbor's shop, while he can get the truck "in" there I don't believe the door will shut. So maintenance? That will be interesting. I wish them luck.....................

Between his motorhome and the new truck, his driveway is full LOL

The DOT is getting tougher on overweight trucking the only answer is adding axels so the weight is distributed to all the wheels,,absolutely unnecessary.

Around here we have "spring breakup" limits, and I doubt you could do anything without extra axles. This includes reduced speed and reduced weight during thaw/ mud season

They planning to go independent?

Like you said, that is one big SOB!

Sounds like it. Neighbor is "tired of his job" (mostly his boss) which was news to me. He sounds like his son would get busy part time in the truck until things firm up, he would learn as we go and maybe get an excavator, etc to tag along. "It's a whole new world" for all three of em. I know nothing of any of this business, first hand.

I forgot what the box capacity is, but you can tell the truck is a big'n. He said it's a Mac?? engine?? 13 speed gearbox(s)

Unfortunately those have become the standard size Dump Trucks if you want to be involved in the business. That is what they use for hauling the hot tar to the paving crews. Also hauling lots of class 5 and fill too.

Friend drives one of those and pulls great pay and the owner gets a real good hourly pay rate for hauling the hot tar with the truck.

Next bigger trucks are the End Dumps pulled with the semi tractors. But they need lots more room to turn around, and more room to be able to drop their loads.

You don't even want to guess how much that equipment costs, would buy you a starter home at today's prices.

Big Investment for sure !

Do they have any other equipment, or just the dump truck? A construction company owning a dump truck is pointless unless they have other equipment, and/or are willing to haul loads for other companies.

Signs have been out here in Stevens County for at least 3 weeks about the Spring Weight Restrictions....Can always tell when WADOT thinks winter is over. Few days ago was heading to Spokane on Highway 2, out in the "West Plains" area. 2 truckers had the road all jacked up. They were going to use Waukon to get out to 90 (no scales so most truckers use Waukon instead of 231). There was a WSP car just south of the signs. First truck did not see the sign/car and was in the process of backing off of Waukon back onto Highway 2. Traffic in both directions was stopped because of these 2 *** clowns. Both trucks were critter haulers with Canadian plates...

That would be one expensive tire bill when it comes time to retread them.

This is evidently the plan. Then expand later. I was very surprised that three guys, all but one have zero heavy truck experience and the son is a "newbie" would jump into this. I think he said the truck cost?? 40G?

X2.5

Buying a truck like that without a contract is ridiculous. I bet they have something on paper already.

The DOT is about to post weight limits here in New Hampshire for the upcoming "mud season ". The reg fees and overweight fees must be killer . They have no idea the maintainence of that rig . JUst to make the payments its gotta run 24/7. USDOT says 72 hours a week is the limit for one driver .

New that’s at least a 180,000-200,000 dollar truck, probably more as it’s a Kenworth.

Those booster axled dumps are hit and miss kinda thing. In urban areas they have the advantage of not having to drop a transfer trailer, but they have the disadvantage of only carrying a 70% load. One of the contractors that bought AC from me had a job in an urban area only 40 miles from the AC plant, decided he was going to use the "Super 10s" like that to haul for him. They only save 10 minutes per trip over a transfer and carry a smaller load. Even with additional trucks the AC on the ground was down but 30% and the cost was up by 20%. He decided after the 1st day Super 10s were not what he was going to finish the project with. In the right market with a good truck broker that Super 10 should be a money maker.

idk bout idaho but here in north carolina a tri-axle dump gets 100 bucks a hour, no telling what that truck would get a hour! and a kw set up like his gose for 70,000 used, half wore out!! its a money maker no doubt! and no,..he dont really need any other equipment, and can run day and night long as driver's and truck holds up!

I have a friend I used to work with years ago. He and his wife quit both their jobs and bought a tandem axle, 18 ton dump truck and a couple of tractors and heavy equipment trailers. They do driveway work and are actually doing quite well.

Your neighbors could be fools.
I personally know 2 Guy's that have tried the dump truck hauling deal, they both lost their ***. The maintenance and fuel is a killer, plus the insurance.
I hope I am wrong, I wish them luck.

Definitely takes an in with the contractors doing the Cities road rebuilding work, they are contracted through the cities.

They have the top pay scales in those jobs. There is also no room for lackies on those jobs, the need to get them done so the cities keep moving.

Takes good experienced drivers to go to work with them.
