In the coming weeks I will be installing the 512 into the 73 scamp. I will mount it to the QA1 k-frame along with the manual steering box. It looks to me like mounting all the steering components, control arms, spindles and brakes just adds more to maneuver when installing. What has been your experiences? I have a 4 post lift for installing the other parts later. If it would be easier to put it all together before, I will. I just have not seen it done before. Any videos references? Thanks

Mock it up and see what you need. Typically you'll need some sort of fixture to hold the engine and trans or the K frame and trans. Decide how high the fixture needs to be to work with your lift. A four post lift may not work so well depending on if you have rails for the tires or arms. If you have rails then you'll have to figure out how to fit stuff in from below.

I put the engine into my Duster from below but I don't have a lift. I have an overhead crane so I used it to lift the car body and then pull the engine and trans up and into position. I then lifted the K frame into position from below using a fixture on my transmission jack.

Thanks Andy. I was going to use the lift to install the other parts, but not to install the motor.

First I would build a dolly for the k-frame-engine and then lower the car onto the dolly assembly. I was hoping to raise the car with the lift but not on the rails, just with the cross member and straps or chains to the car's frame. This way lowering would be very gradual and easy to regulate.

Is there any benefit to fully assembling the k-frame, steering components, control arms etc, prior to install?

if you have a lift, it's the only way to fly!!

I've done it with a floor jack and cherry picker. Engine, trans and K up all the way.

Once you do it from below you will never want to be on top again .....

That came out wrong! Lol...

Seriously though . I will never install from above again . I used my cherry picker just as shown above and made a rolling cart .
Remove steering column maybe ???
Lift the car,. Roll engine/trany/iframe/suspension assembly under it... Lower car into jack stands... Then use cherry picker to lift the assembly into place ... Blot in K-Member and trany cross member. ... Install torsion bars... Connect upper control arms ... Install steering column....Align

DRIVE !

No jacking around trying to align crap and thread bolts in tiny little spaces....most everything is assembled and adjusted out in the open

I built a fixture like pntstr69 out of 2"x2"x.125"square tube , bolted it to the bumper bolt holes , put the engine kframe trans on a furniture dolly , MRS. lifted car with a engine hoist , slid engine under , lowered car onto "K", bolt up , done in 20 minutes Tip: get allthread the size of the "K" bolts , cut into 4 equal pieces , screwing into "K" holes as guides , remove one at a time , go for a snack

No other way except with K-frame, headers the big tti’s, trans, steering box on using cherry picker. First time by myself without a scratch on those headers.
If this old geezer can do it anyone can.

Exactly what i did but with two dollies from Harbor Freight. So EZ us cave men did it.

If you can weld build a dolly similar to Red63440s . Shorter if you will be lifting front vs using a lift... Make sure the engine , kmember and rear of trany are supported other wise the kmember and suspension flop around. Use good castor's so you can move the assembly easily

No need for anything fancy, did a test, zero deflection, I'd do it again!

Did this in a conventional garage with the hood on the car, plenty of room.

I had the engine and transmission mounted on casters so I could roll them around as a unit. Starter, water pump, fan, headers, alternator, etc. are all bolted on and torqued in place. I also installed the fan belt, starter cable, etc. so I wouldn't have to deal with that stuff later on.
I lifted up the front of the car and rolled the engine+trans into place then lowered the front of the car back down on to jack stands. Then I pulled the engine and trans up into the car and bolted it home.

The big holes are for weight savings ?
I am trying to visualize the mounting...

So easy it is and no special jigs needed per say. I did have my nephew who never welded in his life build me a bolt on jig for the US car tools body wheels. I built my jig with simple wood from the HD store and was so easy! Cost was negligible for easy install. Allowed me to build up the K and suspension together while waiting on the body.

Started here with some all thread I had laying around. Mounted the K with some rubber washers and nuts, built it up from there.
