That's how I've always done it and always will. I tried one off the crap on truck like 30 years ago. I don't like the bearing packers because they are a haven for dust and dirt. I never remembered to cover it up and dust and dirt accumulate like metal shavings on a magnet. So, I went back to packing them by hand. It's always clean and gets the job done.
