Hi,

wanna run below 10.99 this season....rules say trans blanket / shield according SFI 4.1 is necessary. What do you use and how´s the fitment / installation? some pics would be great.

1968 Plymouth Valiant, Smallblock, 904 Transmission.

Thanks!

Michael

I used a RCI one on a BB 727 in my duster. So not apples to apples, but it wrapped around the trans like it should. Only issue was having it not interfere with the shifter cable. Had to made a little bracket to keep it off of it. I ended up buying a CSR sheild. Eliminated the shifter cable interference, but I had to beat up the firewall/floor pan lip and I also drilled holes to be able to get to the bellhousing bolts easier.

I have W2 TTI 1 7/8" headers on mine and I didn't feel I could run a blanket because the drivers side header is too close to the transmission. I test fit an old blanket and I could just imagine it melting on long drives.

I also ended up with the CSR shield and had to do everything mentioned above. I used a dolly in an air hammer and really had to enlarge the tunnel on the passenger side as well as knock the lip down. I wish I did the bell housing bolt holes in the floor years ago, so much easier now. I need to find a better way to cover them though.

this one went with my old race car, but I have the same one in yellow on my 904 in the Duster when I’m not running the CSR sheild. Chuck Lofgren made them and they were SFI approved. They sure fit nice...

thanks! i like the way it does cover only the upper half. I searched a while.....do you know if / where these are still being sold?

Anybody experience with the blankets A&A sells for the torqueflites?

Michael

I run a DJ Blanket on the AMX. I tried a CSR Shield, but the fit was so bad and would not fit under the factory floor of the AMX. I ordered a CSR shield for the 904 in my Daytona, March would be 1 year waiting. Canceled the order a couple weeks ago. The DJ blanket I got from CRT , has worked fine , but I had to make supports to push the blanket away form the Cheetah Shifter cable. And modified the headers for clearance.

One thing to consider, the CSR shield checks the box as a flywheel shield as well, which I think is needed at 9.99. Also, once the initial clearance work is done it doesn't take much additional work when R&Ring the trans. I feel like the blankets would be a fighting match each time you worked on it.

Both options :icon_fU:

.....and that’s why I have a CSR shield too. W8 goes into the 9’s and it covers all rule requirements. Blanket is easier to throw on and meets rules for 10/11 range.

it took me 7 mos to get my 904 CSR shield.... I hear they’ll only recert them once.

Are you saying the CSR shield will make a 10 sec 4 sp pass inspection ?

RCI, fit fine except like stated above, keeping it off the linkages. I believe the blankets do a better job of actually containing an explosion. I have seen pictures of holes in the carbon fiber shields, but no first hand knowledge. No issues with increased trans temps either.

Since you are using the 904, I would recommend the csr Carbon fibre shield. The shield will fit without any clearance issues because of the smaller size of the 904. I used to use a blanket, but too much hassle. IMHO

Duane,

i also like the Shield better, but recertification would be a hassle over here….it´s good for 5 years? blanket is less Investment....so propably just get a new one after it expired….

you put this Shield in your car with a 904? really no mods to the Floor?

thanks Michael

None at all. Not 727 though.

All the cars are so different it is hard to say. I had to really stretch the tunnel with an air hammer on the passenger side to get mine to clear with my 904. I have also read where others have put them on 727s with no mods other than hammering the lip flat. My car was a factory 727 car so if the tunnels were different(I don't believe they are) mine would have the larger one.

Well my dart is a 68 and his car is a 68 so I figured they would be the same. The 904 is a lot smaller in the area that gets close to that lip. Ymmv though.

Not sure what the deal is with these shields availability. A local friend of mine waited for months to get his too.

pretty niche’ market.... I strongly suspect they gather orders before they make a few. I waited 7mos for my 904 shield. When CSR called and said they were ready to ship, I contacted a friend and he was able to order one on the spot.

Call around and ask vendors. I needed one ASAP before drag week 2018 and A&A had one in stock that had a few months off of the certification.

Then at an NHRA owned track, with an NHRA employed tech guy, they didn't even look lol.
