What a Family Show Was Like 65 Years Ago

-
We very seldom missed that show when I was growing up. Of coarse, my sisters had the hots for Ricky.

One of my favorite shows growing up was Leave it to Beaver. I still watch it every morning before I leave the house.

The Honeymooners. Ed Sullivan. Andy Griffith. We did not get NBC and poorly got ABC out our house. Back then, CBS was channel 4. Both grandparents and both aunts and uncles in town got "all three" LOLOL channels. That was all there was!!!! We used to go out to "gramps" and watch Gunsmoke, Have Gun, will Travel, "The Honeymooners" depending on when we were there.

Gramps had a big 'ol ceramic DPDT knife switch (I stillhave one!!) that swithed the twinlead between to antennas. One "cut special" and aimed for Channel 2, the other antenna for the other 2

Our house had a "double pitch" roof with dormers (like a barn roof) and was one steep SOB. I have no idea how Dad got the antenna up there without killing himself.

I grew up here in the N end of Idaho, and can remember at least 2 summers, when mom would be in the house ironing, etc, and would yell, and we'd come in "to see." The TV would be getting "skip" from the LA CA area for a few seconds at a time, with "cross hatch" and wavy lines part of the rest of the time........and then it would fade out and be gone

I remember three channels too......and "ROB" was the remote control. lol

When I was a kid in 1970, all we got was 4 Channels (and we got 4 because we were living close to Philly). ABC, NBC, CBS and PBS. We also only had a black and white 13” TV.

Then one day in 1975, my Dad brought home a new 17” Color TV and a UHF antenna for the roof and we got 3 more! And in color!

WooHoo! It was like Chistmas!

3 more channels...and they showed old reruns! (still in black and white)

It was like a whole new World.

Then, 6 years later...cable arrived. WOW! Now we have 26 channels!

The modern World began...

I grew up with 2 channels, sometimes we could pick up a third. I remember the folks renting a vcr at the video store and we had movie night.

I guess I was lucky. Grew in Illinois, close to St. Louis. We got all three networks in the early 60's, plus what I guess was an independent. There may have been more, that I don't remember. And like Rob, I was the remote, and would get yelled at if I turned the dial too fast.

My Dad bought a TV in 1962 the day before John Glen was launched into space. That was the first thing we watched on a TV we owned. We only got one channel for a couple of years until another town added a network. We had a lever on the antenna mast to turn to get two. After the 10:00 news we watched this.....

Back in SW Ga we had 1 channel, almost some days could pickup the second, almost. I had twin cousins that graduated HS in "62. They graduated college and had jobs before they had their first tv.
Back then TV attempted to reach some life lessons, the difference between right and wrong.
Today, we watch reruns of old westerns, le Gunsmoke, Bonanza, the RFD channel, but.the biggest waste of time, the car channel!!!!!!! lol

Yes! And kids nowadays "just don't know". lol

3, 6 and 10 in the Philly area. Till we got a better antenna and got UHF. Ultraman!

We had 13, and 41. Then in the early 80s 24. We could also get GPTV channel 29 from Columbus "sometimes". lol

As I think about it, family TV is right. Kids could watch the adult shows, and adults could actually enjoy some of the kid shows.
