First Time Drag racing

-
Grant your clutch tamer did tempt me and probably the route I'd go if I planned on racing frequently. But 3 times is probably the most I'll make it. I didn't think CW was necessary but I wanted to be sure. Thank you for your input. Furrystump my gauge isn't liquid filled on this one. I also replaced the fuel pump with a carter super pump

The Wallace calculator seems like a fun toy, but I'm not quite sure what it has to do with reality...

Its a useful tool that if you know how to use it, it works pretty good and has done so on all my old race cars and others that I knew of actually. All you need know is the weight of your car and start with say a street car time slip. From there you can work out your current hp from weight/mph and then your new gearing/tyre size/actual on track hp/rpm needed to run whatever better number you want, which again if you know your stuff will dictate the parts you buy, takes a lot of the guessing out of it, but we are talking about cars that hook of course. Once up and running and you have your new quicker slip it can assist with showing you if your 60's are crap or not etc. etc.

No guessing needed here my 60 foots are crap! LOL.. we'll see what the clutch Tamer has to say about that this year...

Do you actually race?
No guys who can race are punished. Most all the time the best drivers win.
I race a lot, half *** guys dont go many rounds anywhere

Pro stock blows( and they cant field 16 cars a lot) is because of money. Few guys have it an the rest dont.
That and the cars don't look like cars anymore

Yup. I used to race. Always with a stick. Take away the electronics bullshit and see what happens. The problem is clutch tuning takes a hundred times more skill than a slouch box. On top of that, you need to be able to tune the chassis. That’s why there are so many powerglides out there. They cover a multitude of chassis evils.

On top of all that, very few guys can actually shift. I’ve taught many guys to do it, but only 1, maybe 2 actually can do it, over and over. The rest fall back into bad habits and lazy driving.

It's been a long while...lol..:poke:.......

Last weekend I finally took my Duster drag racing at a local muscle car day. Even though the car had many issues it was a blast.
It is a 72 Duster, 360/380 magnum(Bigs 750, M1, chrome box, msd coil, TTI headers w/18" ext), 4 speed, 3.91 8.75 w/spool and adj. snubber, 002/003 springs, CE 3-way shocks all around, 295/55/15 Mickey Thompson ET Street SS.
First, some of the problems. There was a pretty solid bog off the line, launching anywhere from 3500-5k. Also found that it didn't want to shift at high rpms(like hitting a wall). Syncros? Additionally at about 4500 plus it started to pop and kinda fall on its face sometimes. Lack of fuel? We messed with the timing some and that didn't change much. Also noticed the fuel filter never really fills above half.
Best stats of the day
60'- 1.970 330-5.691 1/8- 8.814 @ 80.6 1000 11.421 1/4 13.636 @ 102.02

Planning on switching to 3/8 fuel line and a Carter strip super w/ Holley reg, MSD 6al, MSD pro billet distributor.
What do you guys think is left in her and what I should do?

First time cool, did anyone tell you leave on the 3rd yellow light right when it's turned. It's just a good way to get really good on reaction time, & if dude next to you has a little faster car you can get em to jump sometimes.

I always left when the last yellow light went out.

Yeah back when I was racing all the time 1990s, I got the tip from my dad who I knew was a great drag racer. I thinks it's good for cars slower than 10.00

I have always heard this but never actually tried it. I was more so just shaking it down last time. Hopefully this year will be much better. Well update time. The McLeod pressure plate I wanted was no longer produced and wasn't supposed to be listed on their website. I ended up changing to a Ram 10.95 b&b with 2400lbs of plate load with a McLeod organic/ceramic (500 series?) disc. It had a centerforce with organic disc in it before. Pretty worn but also set up wrong same as the linkage so it should shift better. All back together now after a few fiascos but functioning perfectly. Breaking it in currently. I have an MSD pro billet distributor with 6al to go in yet and will be acquiring some hoosier 26" x 10.5" slicks on some slots before the next outing.

Well I finally ran it again on Sunday and it was way better. The new clutch shifted great at 6400. No more shooting ducks in higher rpms. There is still the bog at the hit, I didn't have any discharge nozzles to test. The track was packed so I only got 3 runs in test and tune before bracket racing. So there wasn't any real tuning but it ran way better and pretty consistent. We never even looked at the plugs and I only timed it by ear when the MSD stuff went in. Once that bog is out of there it has to be in the 12s easy. On a side note, I won my class for the day.

Good job dude .

Freakin YEA! DUDE! YEA!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Keep up the good work!

Decent results, can see in the 60ft a little room for improvement, get rid of the bog and some tuning you'll be in the 12's no problem. Great looking Duster too.

that's 12.50 et with that MPH all day with a decent 60'

Nice job on getting the W!

He said he's only going to run at the track 3-4 times a year....that was before he got his hands on that trophy!

Thanks man. That's what I am hoping for

Just need to get out of the hole and it should be home free. It launched hard but immediately fell on its face. The funny part was with every launch it ejected my radio head out of the dash. It apparently wasn't secured well.

I definitely want to get back out there as soon as possible. It's so much fun when things go right. Plus, few things are more fun than rowing the gears down the track like the racing legends of old

Made it back to the track for the first time this season last Sunday. Few precise changes were made. I messed around with the timing and made a few pulls on the street the night before and it felt like an improvement. I need some timing tape. Got my powershifting working pretty good. Only missed one shift all day. It was third. Weird part is thats the first time I ever missed third. Still has a bog at the line. My carb guy said that my 30cc accelerator pump reservoir is probably pretty well dry launching at 4k. Also suggested changing out the 20* bushing in the msd distributor for a smaller one for more initial advance. It was a pretty hot day (about 85*+). However, I did make it into the 12s pretty consistently. I also won my class again so it was a pretty good day. Another trophy to the collection and I think there is more in her.

O man you are a done duck now. The sickness is coursing thru your veins. Next thing you know you are hiding money in an envelope in your tool box for that next go fast part. Pretty soon you will be walking thru the pits and know what kind of beer is in each Teams cooler. Welcome to the disease. Hah! Clearly I think your car is gorgeous!

Love that “370HEMI” on the back!
I gave serious thought to badging it as a 340 for total sleeper effect! But you just can’t hide the rumble of a Hemi! And frankly I worked so long and so hard to get the Hemi stuffed in there I am kind of proud of it. My wife’s only request was no rollbar! The drag racing sickness over powers us all! Hah! O wait I need to put my left over lunch money in my tool box envelope! I have obeyed, for now……..

Thats a great looking demon and a hemi to boot. The disease is definitely creeping in. It's an addiction but you meet a lot of cool people along the way.

Get a blue accelerator pump cam and use hole #2, I don't think your throttle is open very far with a free rev 4000 RPM. also get a #31 nozzle. That should fix the bog at the line.

I have the assortment of holley pump cams. It has a .31 nozzles in it. I bought some .35s but haven't tried them yet. Thanks for the tip and will try it out. The trouble is I can't test this on the street because it doesn't bog unless it hooks. BFGs don't hook
