What things do I need to test for spark and how do I do it?

Welcome to the list.

Testing for spark - you might need a helper. Remove a spark plug wire from the spark plug. Slide back the boot so the terminal can be seen. Set the wire on the exhaust manifold so there is a gap to the exposed terminal, about 1/4' to 1/2". Insert the key and crank, or turn the key to ON and jumper the start relay and see if there is a spark at the plug wire end.

Hey guys I know its been a minute but I did want to at least post an update. Some posts never get updated even if the problem has been resolved.

I found that I didnt have a carb choke thermostat on the thing. It isnt the right size so I bought one from amazon. And guess what? My dad opened the bowl of the carb and showed me gas wasnt in there so he poured some in. Gave it a few startups and now It starts right up every time on the first try.

this car is irritating but its a relief when it comes together. a visual for me is better seeing my dad show me flap being put to the open position on the top changes depending on the temp warming up. and when it is cold it should be closed.

Alright guys I appreciate the help I hope you will be around for more help

Yes the ignition coil. Also, you might take a solid core wire and rig a spark gap to the center of the coil to a ground. Crank the engine and see what the spark is doing. you should get good hot blue sparks when cranking, about 3/8 inch long or longer

PLEASE NOTE

I believe you are confusing us,

"Crank" means the engine rotates when the starter is engaged
"Fire" means the engine coughs, bangs, attempts to start and may remain running for a few seconds
"Fire and run" means the engine starts and runs

ALSO LOOK under the hood for the seat belt reset box. This is a small box often near the electronic ignition box, with a reset button. It was part of the seat belt system. The car will NOT crank (turn) with the key if that reset is "popped"

Wow I haven't seen one of those in over 20 years. Always rewired for bypass/ delete of that unit

I'm a bit a dunce when it comes to wiring I literally need a video. Or would love it if you had a video of yours
I'm sorry I don't have a video I haven't done that jumper in a long long time I'd have to see it I probably need a wiring diagram as well.
Tell you what I'll go look at a service manual and see if I can jog my memory.
