71 Duster 360 (new project)

-
Worked on moving the tach ...actually got a new Autometer tach .....putting it up on the dash pad.....got two more wires to hook up....tach light and ground....

my feet got cold....

but the I could watch the big screen tv from the drivers seat in the car...

Fired this one up and loaded into trailer to get out of way...tested transbrake under load...did not move......ok....

Ok..We got the 71 Fuster out to the TnT.........Had a few things this afternoon.....wash the car....change the oil.....smelled like ethanol......put some new rims with different back spacing and used tires since we had a rub last time......making sure there is no rub before putting new tires on it.....

Her time is on the left......

She made only one pass...everything worked like it was suppose to and nothing broke....race saturday and sunday......

Fuster ran ok today....10.55 and 10.56,,,,,pretty consistent.....Kid relighted in 1st round....engine spit out a freeze plug at the end of the track.....outside of that all is good...

going to check timing...and pull valve covers in morning just look...

friend is going to reset the camber in the front end for me at the track.....

With head wind today...Duster ran 10.60s all day.....Duster made it to the 3rd round......

If you look at the video above...there is a 69 Dart in the other lane......Paul Haszlauger ...He races Nhra stocker...former Chrysler dealer mechanic....one hell of a nice guy.....He painted my 70 AARcuda and 73 340 Duster...

any way I needed help in alighting the front end of this Duster....as it was suffering from bad camber...I dropped the car off on Sunday morning...he called me today to say he was having problems....as the cam bolts were maxed out...I have RMS upper control arms with heim joints...and we agreed that they needed to be screwed out to get more camber ...Told him i would be there to help him after work .....I got there around 2 30 pm...with tool box and all....i looked ,,,,,and he said it was done....well...crap...that made me happy...lol

now he sayes he will put it on my bill...no way....i got the wallet out and paid him...probably not enough for everything he has done for me....He is not a member here...but wanted to throw a shout out for him....thanks Paul........

Those heims are long enough to allow for adjustment right? I’m sure you know, but would hate to see the results if you didn’t :)

Duster ran great all weekend...3 bracket races in 2 days....ran a best of 10.49 today...had a small problem with electric fan putting a hole in the radiator....but had spare parts to fix in between rounds. we thought the electric water pump had burned up also so we stole the one off my 75 Duster along with the radiator and fan....the lower bolt on it stripped and would not tighten up. Used a few zipties to hold it in place...lol

Seems like there is a small oil leak in the front of the motor....will get it up on the hoist and look...got 3 weeks till next race.

Duster ran good on Saturday with a best of 10.54.....lost a close one in 1st round even with a .000 light...car spun or something and slowed down...but the RT made it close...
anyway i got a brake new set of slicks waiting to go on...was suppose to have them mounted for this race but I did not make it...and just put two new batteries in the car....as it seems like the batteries were on there way out...5 yrs old....and now the powermaster one wire alternator is not charging....always something...

so Sunday.....she goes to start car...nothing....i can hear the Starter relay switch clicking...try jumping it nothing....we replace the srs nothing...wondering it the starter died....anyway...it never made it on the track on sunday

got the Duster unloaded and pushed into the garage with my 9 yr old grandson helping me.....
weird stuff....hit the starter button and the starter hits and goes no where...then nothing...no noise....no power going to the starter...i got good juice from the battery to the post on the starter relay switch....then nothing...lol...oh...well probably something simple...

torn the front of the engine apart....just gotta pull balancer off....waiting for all the water on the floor to dry up...get that seal replaced......got a few extra covers...might just knock a new seal in one of those and do a quit Remove and replace...

Powermaster one wire alternator took a ****....there is an alternator and starter shop near by...going to let him take a look at the alternator later this week.....

and it is only monday.....

had starter checked...it is dead...ok...that problem solved...
getting the power master alternator rebuilt.....that problem solved...

got one more problem not sure what it is yet,....going to drop pan on car tomorrow...thank god for that QA I k member

what was the saying? if not for bad luck, I'd have none at all.
Thank-you for updates and maybe one of these days I'll be energized to get started on my project.

the starter dying might have been a blessing.....will find out tomorrow...

well..if this aint the *****.....ok...engine had a small oil leak in front of engine....figured it was the timing chain seal....and it was leaking...
Found this chunk of aluminum lying on top of the crank sprocket....actually getting ground up by the crank sprocket....
well...what is aluminum inside the engine......Pistons.....I am assuming we have a broken piston.....plus we got the grinding of the aluminum in the motor...not taking a chance....was going to pull engine and replace one piston .....and I dont even know if there is any other damage.....

plus a ground was ground in the timing chain cover too....

ouch.....this is from a piston?? you´re right, maybe good thing the starter died. Good luck with the spare engine!

Michael

At this point i can only guess.....nothing else in bottom end that is aluminum....i figured to be save and not destroy the engine....yes...good thing the starter died..

spare engine place....hooking things up...start up maybe tomorrow...Running Sunday for sure....need to mount a couple of sets of new slicks...before thursday
It has been raining since Tuesday in Vegas and has shut our project down I have been able to get to work on it during working hours....suppose to rain a couple of more days next week ago...
