Any tips on adjusting a Hurst Promatic2 ?

My Hurst Promatic2 is now hooked up to the 42RH, but was in the car when it had the 904 as well.
I have never been able to get this stupid thing adjusted right.
I followed the instructions, which is to put the transmission lever in the first gear position, and then put the shifter in first, and adjust the connection at the lower end of the cable, so the pin just drops into the hole on the shift lever.
The shift lever on the trans is the one that came with the shifter, so it should be the correct length.
After adjusting it this way a couple weeks ago, I'm having all sorts of trouble with it shifting correctly.
Like park into reverse works ok, but drive or neutral in to reverse, it doesn't quite get there and you have to give it a little nudge.
If I use the ratchet feature to drop it from drive to second and then to first, the first pull doesn't quite get it in to second, so it takes three pulls on the handle to get from drive to first. Then accelerating in first, I hit the handle to get second, and it doesn't shift unless I hit it again.
Obviously I need to get it in the air again and try another adjustment.

Has anyone had better luck with this shifter? Or have another method of adjustment that has worked for you?
