as I understand it, the 340 was available in early 1973 and later in the run the 340 was dropped with introduction of the 360 . is this an accurate statement? can you guys with the knowledge please explain how this worked? were the 340 and 360 both available in 1973?

so there are no documented late production 73 360 powered dusters or dart sports out there? I want to be sure I have my facts straight
thanks!

I have never seen or even heard of one. To my knowledge it was never officially offered until '74. But, that being said, can you ever say "never" when it comes to Ma Mopar? The closest you'll probably come is a '74 model year with a '73 build date.

thanks for the info

Off topic , but I have been wondering/ which would be the best to build a stroker out of , for block strength and parts availability ?? Which one can usually take the biggest bore and survive? generally speaking
I know absolutley nothing about them !

I see where some people are asking stupid prices , that I will not pay for a 340----------

The bores are 4.04 - 340, 4.00 - 360.
I have had 340’s go south at a .030 over bore. Some have gone to 4.1. I have seen 360’s take a .070 over bore. I have read in the rags as well as from Gary P, Ploy Guru, the early Poly 318 going to a 4.00. Maybe more, I’m not sure.
Sonic check first! Then you know.

Stroker kits are at the ready on shelves. Ether will be fine to stroke. IF you want to not pick and split hairs, the 340 inch is better due to the larger bore and should take the largest piston and smaller crank journals for reduced bearing speed. (Yawn...)

If you are looking to stroke a small block I personally nowadays would go with a 5.9 Magnum.

Couple different reasons one is the fact that it is a roller cam block. And another thing being that there are plenty of them available at the moment at a decent price. And when I say decent price I mean you can buy the whole truck for 500 to $1,000.

Bore the Magnum .040 and that's the same as a stock bore 340 then throw the 4-inch stroker in it. I really don't think you'll be too concerned about the bearing speed difference between the 340 main journal and the 360.

Maybe if you were trying to make 600 horsepower out of it then you would be concerned.

Agreed, a Magnum block is a better quality block with better lifter bores. If your going to run a Hyd. roller cam, stock lifters and the spider is just fine.

Like I said about bearing speed .... Yaaaawwwwnnnn...
I suppose if your racing heads up with deep pockets spending big on parts and heads and .... you know the drill... Otherwise, I would not worry a bit.

JUST THINKING HERE-----
DO THE NEW TRICK FLOW HEADS WORK ON THE 5.9 ENGINE ??---------Thanks , guys .

A Magnum block *most likely* needs to be drilled for rocker oiling to use an LA style head. Although, there have been reports of some early Magnum blocks already having been drilled from the factory.

Yes, you’ll need the “Magnum” rockers & oil through pushrods as per TF. 1 head series that can use both rocker types for both block types.

100% fact. This is what make the TF heads super attractive in addition to excellent flow specs.
