Installing a new water pump. The new one has a metal plate and a gasket that will go against the housing then a second gasket, and the old pump did not come with the plate. Is that how they make them now?
 
I just replaced my water pump a couple weeks ago. The new pump (Airtex) had the steel plate. So did the one I removed, no idea how old the old pump was.
 
The 2-gaskets-1-plate design with aluminum pump housing is according to factory spec, from the start to the end. Sounds like your old pump is one of the aftermarket cast iron items that did not use a separator plate.
 
Thanks you guys. It has a Chrysler emblem on it and its blue. I think it's the original. Maybe a mopar replacement though
 
…then perhaps your old pump does have the steel plate and plate-to-pump gasket, and it's cooked in place by decades of service. Either way, don't worry about it.
