Ernie seen a thing on the news about one of the local hospitals looking for folks that sew to help them out with making masks. She went and picked up one of the kits that some group was offering. Only enough materials to make 5 masks. She has been looking for the elastic that they use, can't find it anyplace.
Don't know if this was the local news channel but.....Sewing community steps up to help with COVID-19 medical mask shortage

So if any of the members here have a family member that sews...and they feel like helping out...

just got email from harbor freight. they are donating all their n95 masks, face shields,5/7mil nitrile gloves to hospitals. thumbs up for hf.

Cool but, I figured they wouldn’t have any like everyone else. Good for them.

I just helped film a short segment on this this morning
i should be able to post the link tomorrow

3M Filtrete (Smart 1900, 2200, 2500 versions only) house furnace filters can be used if you just can’t find anything “proper” Take them apart, cut the filter material to the size needed, some elastic or big thick rubber bands etc, staple gun what have you....improvised masks can be made. Certainly not the same but if your coughing heavily something is better than nothing

OK @inkjunkie got a good start on this "Making Protection Masks" thread.

Here are some things to help spark the imaginations of all of the talented people, and creative people on our site FABO.

Let us all see what we can make happen here, all of our grocery store workers and all of our health care workers need help however we can assist them so that they can safely continue to do their jobs.

As follows here as some examples of how to get started.

My sister is a charge nurse in South Carolina. They had someone come and donate 100's of homemade masks. They weren't allowed to take them since they aren't sterile.

Video of one example of how to make a protective mask out of 2 sheets of cotton material:

Here’s a video on improvising masks, and if you do a YouTube search of their videos you see they are posting daily on preparedness. Canadian Preparedness/Canadian Prepper among the many out there.Canadian Preppers Official Website

Well, something is better than nothing. The virus is smaller than that masks filtration abilities. You can get 2 virus cells together through the mask.
The n95 mask is as small as 3 microns, the virus is 1.25.

I’ve been working on utilizing bandannas with a section of Filtrete filter media sandwiched between, just needs a thin strip of aluminum glued at the nose area of the filter media to seal, but seals elsewhere and is stylish at the same time. Again, better than nothing and mostly to keep from hacking out...but it works for pine pollen season too.

Well that's kinda crazy. They certainly don't need to be sterile in this virus environment. Hospital here is paying for people to make them they need them so badly.

She is in the surgical/trauma surgery side of things. That might have had something to do with it.

Going through the garage, found a 20-pack. And a round of .50 BMG and .22 LR...Back to making a planter out of a beer stein.

Yes as in one of the above videos, the people that receive the masks, machine wash them in batches and can use a little bleach with the wash cycle. Still better than nothing, If someone accidentally spits a gob at you while talking . . . for the folks working in close contact with people at their medical and retail jobs. Receptionists and All . . .

It absolutely blows my mind that our hospitals don’t have enough masks. I understand the bed issues that will come but you would think we would be sitting on piles of masks.

Unfortunately everyone has gone to the "Just In Time" parts and supply chains, as nobody wanted to sit on the inventories for extended periods of time. I am sure that will all change now after this, heading into the future. Also bringing all of our manufacturing back into the USA for our needs and our jobs.

I'd be thinking a professional would have their own canister mask for the serious stuff.
I guess that only goes for professional auto painters and chemical applicators.

The ones that Ernestina are making are going to an assisted living center. One of Ernies friends, Joanie, lived there up until her death. Jenn, Joanies daughter is friends with several of the elderly folks living there. The facility knew that Joanie used to sew and figured that her daughter may still be in contact with Joanies friends that sew. The email said that they need not be sterile as they will be getting washed prior to being used....and in a time like this they are willing to take whatever they can get to help with the residents.

Spokane County Raceway had an impromptu Open Road Course day today. I am still unable to carry my cameras but I stopped by so that I could measure the tops of the various walls where I will be placing cameras this year. Got to talking with the safety guy at the track. He said he had to jump many hurdles to get the county/CDC to allow today to happen....from taking everyones temperature multiple times to sanitizing the rest rooms hourly. He also needed to make sure that there was enough masks present. The track is a county park. The safety crew is actually county firefighters and EMT's. I mentioned the mask thing to him. He told me he stopped by the county facility where he gets the medical supplies for the track from....no gloves nor masks to be had. Person in charge of the inventory said that FEMA has snatched up as much PPE as they possibly could...and did not care that they were leaving the counties employees with nothing.
