A sending unit that reads correctly on a stock gauge and not 1/4 full after 2 blocks would be nice. Or even a way to make the crappy ones work correctly.
 
Not really. The best you can do is get your original rebuilt.
 
It really doesn't matter how it reads as long as when it reads empty it's empty.

A couple of weeks ago I. bought a tank and sending unit from A-1 Auto. So far so good. Only used a quarter of a tank, waiting to get down half a tank to fill it up and see how much it takes.
 
I you can find an intact original sender, even if it doesn't work send it to Wolf & Company. They refurb them, I recently sent them one & am waiting to get it back. I'll post the results after a tank or two of fuel.
