I'm working my way up from back to front. I've made it to the torsion bar crossmember. All 4 tires on strong cribbing blocks I made. I also made a flat block of wood to sit under the trans pan when I unhook the trans crossmember.
1. Does this rubber in the trans mount need replacing? If so, best place to buy it and how difficult? I do not own a lot of tools, no shop press, etc.
2. Can I take off this tail weight? I just want to clean up the tunnel a little farther. Then I can just put it back on? It looks pretty straightforward.
I can't find anything in the service manual I bought about either of these. My car is a 1975 Valiant/Scamp, 318, 904 trans.
Thanks.

#1 Yes, Too many to list!

#2 likely but was there to reduce harmonic vibration.

1. Replace the whole mount.

2. Lose the hunk of iron. EDIT: disregard this advice. For your particular car you should re-install it. I told you what I would do. Might not be good for you.

Trans mount is due for replacement theres 2 bolts - use 5/8" socket 6" extention that bolt the mount to the trans, looking straight up from directly underneath mount.
The bolt that points to the rocker panels is pretty rusty looking and going to be a pain! USE PB Blaster it works great, spray it down FIRST, DON'T get it in your eyes.
Lastly you can remove the balancer- it is NOT a weight or a hunk of iron- put it back on after you have done your clean up work. Trust me on this, it IS a balancer.

I replaced the rear trans mount on mine with a new one. Energy suspension mount from what I recall. No press required with a new mount. Supported the rear of the trans with a jack like you are suggesting. I also replaced the rear seal on the transmission tail housing at the same time. I would reinstall that weight for balancing. If weight reduction is a priority, I’d suggest removing the bumperettes on the front and rear bumpers. They are 6 pounds each.

I had a 73' Dodge Van 360-727-8 3/4- 3.23 sure grip, pulled the trans and had it re-built (11 year old towing ) pulled balancer off before re-install and had a constant pulsing vibration while driving, Long story short re-installed balancer no more vibration.

Interesting. My trans guy (definitely not a new guy) said I don't need it. What does it do?

That hunk of metal on the back is to help dampen vibration...

Also change the trans mount...

Then get another trans guy - the one you went to doesn't know what he's doing...

I said it is a balancer and was wrong it is a DAMPER but it does eliminate vibration which is what i was explaining.
Thank you Alaskan_TA

Hmmmm. I had my transmission and driveshaft all done at the same time. I don't have a noticeable vibration. Is it possible to have everything balanced to the point where you don't need it?

Let me add that if the dampener weight and more specially it's rubber components and sleeves are worn out and deteriorated it is worthless without being whole. it was there for a specific propose to reduce vibration.

I have a nice BB example sitting on the shelf!

Have you put one on and driven it? Try it even if its for ***** n giggles......
Sure. Driven lots. Both ways.
The one from this car is out in the shop. I'll put it on and see!

My question stands, though. Is it possible to not need one?

But for the OP, I stand corrected! For your car, clean it up and re-install it!

Mopar is not the only one to add these. I have seen them on plenty of Blue ovals. You have to understand that all bodies, frames and or chassis' have some manufacturer tolerance. alignment of the drivetrain is not always ideal from car to car. if it came with , I would keep it and rebuild/refurbish it! JMO!

I use them if its there if not and I have a vibration I pull one off of one of my spares and usuially problem solved.
Just what I have experienced.
Like 1969383S states "older cars had larger tolerances"

I have this one that was on my BB 727 Since purchased. it weighs about 2.5/3 pounds. The rubber isolation is deteriorating. The trans was not original. I ditched it. likely was a cast crank model. "C"body? If all was stock to the car and known as such it would have stayed.

Is it trans issue, alignment issue,? Not sure, but my car is pretty vibration free without it, based on a muscle car approach.

Dear Woody's Scamp sorry for using your post but if it your DAMPER is there and in good condition put it back on.

Thanks everyone for the education, especially you Mr. Sinister. This is why I love this site. I found a new trans mount on Mancini's web page. I'll call tomorrow to make sure it's the right one. The damper will go back on (new rubber?) and that rear/tail trans seal seems like a good idea to replace, as this car has sat for a long time. (thanks, H22A4)

I and others have taken those off, and some were fine but some vibrated without it.
Test without it and see if you need it.

If you replace that mount with the PST poly mount all you need to do is knock the rest of that rotten rubber out and slide the 2 piece poly in that oval sleeve then put the bolt back in.

Standard duty for about 20 bucks plus shipping.
Energy Suspension Transmission Mounts

There is also a heavy duty version in the poly inserts, or you can even buy the whole mount for about 50 bucks.
