Working in IT. Now I'm the firefighter you see climbing the tower saving babies.

Working IT is a lot like being a firefighter.. you're ignored, and often many ridicule you.. until they really need you.
'Why do you guys need a new $500K firetruck?!? All you do is wash it!"
"Why do you need a new $200K SAN? Stuff works good now!"
Much like the firefighter, who you rarely see unless he's opening up fire hydrant to clean it out and make sure it works good, IT is ignored... until the **** hits the fan.
Sending 150 users to work from home. Yeah, I can push out a GPO to install a Cisco soft phone, a VPN connection so they can connect, headsets so they can call, and set up security on all this... like the fireman, yeah, I can get to the top of that building and spray it down.
I'm the Sr. Network admin in a regional call center. We do medical billing and insurance stuff.. so, lots of HIPAA laws, as well as financial info.. so security is a concern.
I have an awesome IT director who understood the need to update tons of stuff, and it's paying off now.
We have a lot of people that would be out of a job, without all the stuff that we've done the last few years... much like many would be out of a place to live without a firefighter.

Give a nod to your IT guy. He's doing his best. Much like a firefighter... and many others that are ignored, or ridiculed, who will step up in these crazy times and make your life better.
