I’m pulling the trans out of my Dart. 1970 318/904. Daily driver, 318 is near close to factory hp.

I want a reliable transmission that will be still be a daily driver but maybe twice a summer at our local strip for the memories to run against my son’s Plymouth. I’ve been reading a lot of threads here on 904s. I’ve rebuilt two 727s over the years and it looks like the 904 is pretty similar.

I’m looking for suggestions on parts that should be replaced but not included in the typically available kits to give me a strong reliable transmission.

As an example here’s a kit from Summit and what comes included. I’ve notice none of them come with the low/reverse band. Is this something that ought to be purchased? Sounds like a good idea to install a bolt in sprag while in the neighborhood. we live in a hot summer climate- separate trans cooler over plumbing it to the radiator?

Description: TCI Pro Super Transmission Overhaul kits consists of the parts necessary to facilitate a transmission rebuild, including gaskets, a seal kit, pan gasket (reusable type), performance frictions, steel clutches, bands, adjustable modulator and a high volume filter and drain plug kit.

Thanks for any help. I’m not in a hurry so I have the time to get what I need to do this right and make it last.

Transtar deluxe kit from northern auto....
As for the Sprag. just replace the rollers and springs with a ten dollar kit

I used the kit from summit. It lasted one hard launch then was ka put...

Called cope racing trans bought all the parts and its been good for over a year.

Note- i am not part of CRT. We just happen to have the same name.

Parts are the same just in different box and different price....only 3 companies made clutch disc...alto, borg Warner, and raybestes

I always buy the cheap seal and washer kit from Rockauto, then new bands and clutches separately (red eagle clutches and a 1.60" forward band, standard material double wrap reverse). Pretty cheap and seems to hold up to my abuse.

Go the extra mile and replace all the brass bushings. ...
They are a bit of a pain, but they are wear items too.
After 40 to 50 years - they're worn.
All the centerlines of all the shafts are riding on them....
Your transmission will be ready for another 50 years of service.

And there is only a couple of OEM quality gasket sets. One being Trans-Tec, the other Precision. Make sure you get a washer kit, bushing kit, and an item most forget; the output shaft bearing. It's old, and for the 904 there is only one, and has been the same for 1966 to 2003. The O.D. of it is 2.440". And yes, replace both the front and rear band. Shift kit wise, it's hard to beat the Transgo
I laughed when I read your original post on the TCI KIT. It includes an "ADJUSTABLE MODULATOR". In all my years in the transmission industry I don't ever recall seeing a modulator on a 904 or a 727. Mind you I might be wrong.
